4722 Advancement in Rank Procedure

Procedural Guidelines  

  1. Untenured faculty members will hold the rank of Instructor.  
  2. Those eligible for the rank of Professor and Professor Emeritus will be tenured faculty.  
  3. Promotion in Rank  
    1. An Instructor shall be promoted to the rank of Professor upon receiving tenure.  
    2. When a tenured faculty member intends to retire, they may request in writing to the Chair of the Faculty Senate a promotion to Professor Emeritus upon retirement. When granted, the promotion is effective upon retirement. i. Upon the written request of a tenured faculty member, Emeritus status may also be awarded posthumously by the Faculty Senate to a tenured faculty member for meritorious service.  
    3. Upon approval by the Faculty Senate, the Chair will communicate promotional decisions to the Executive Vice President for Student Learning and Success.  
      1. The EVP-SLS will communicate this decision to a) the head of the faculty’s administrative unit; b) the head of Human Resources; and c) the head of Technology Support Services.  
  4. Privileges of Professor Emeritus Rank a. Each Professor Emeritus, upon the submission of a written request to the head of their administrative unit, shall be entitled to the following privileges of this rank to the extent feasible after the same needs of full-time and associate faculty members are met.  
    1. Use of a shared office, space permitting as determined by the unit administrator. 
    2. Faculty privileges in the use of the library, gymnasium and other campus facilities. 
    3. Use of a campus mailbox or e-mail address.  
    4. Consideration by the President for unpaid participation in College committees, other College bodies, or events as an Ex-Officio member. 
    5. Faculty parking privileges.  
    6. Secretarial assistance to the extent feasible.  
    7. Inclusion on the mailing/e-mail list of their former administrative unit. 
    8. Faculty privileges in admission to campus events.  
    9. Inclusion in the faculty roster of the College catalog and directory.  
    10. Eligibility to subscribe to the Faculty Senate Listserv.
