Policy Name:  Environmental Sustainability & Equity

Applicable Code/Law: RCW 70A.02.100 and other sustainability and environmental statutes, RCW 43.21 (Environmental Policy Act) 

Procedural Guidelines 

  • Promote the reduction of present and future risks of hazardous materials generated by the Shoreline campus. 
  • Meet or exceed the standards set by federal, state, and local laws pertaining to hazardous materials. 
  • Promote the purchase and use of products manufactured using recycled, reusable, and sustainably produced materials. 
  • Establish procedures to conserve resources and reduce waste in ongoing processes and continually develop waste reduction procedures. 
  • Maintain and improve recycling systems for non-hazardous materials. 
  • Promote conservation of energy, water, and other natural resources. 
  • Encourage conservation of fuels through the promotion of bus, van and carpool use, bicycles, and other sustainable methods. 
  • Increase the awareness of sustainability issues and practices through campus events, curriculum, and professional development. 
  • Promote improvements in indoor and outdoor air quality. 
  • Develop, to the fullest extent possible, capital master plans and projects consistent with principles of sustainability. 
  • Strive to meet the goals of the Climate Action Plan in promoting climate neutrality and sustainability. 

The College shall make a good-faith effort to engage Indigenous communities in sustainability-related initiatives. The College will request that the President, in coordination with the DEI Officer, conduct outreach to appropriate Indigenous partners in a timely and culturally responsive manner. While participation by Indigenous communities is voluntary and may not always occur, the College is expected to demonstrate reasonable and ongoing efforts to pursue such engagement.
