What is Passport to Careers?

Passport to Careers Promise Scholarship  

Have you been in foster care? Or were you homeless without a parent or guardian? Shoreline Community College is collaborating with Passport to Careers Promise Scholarship program (Passport) to support the educational pursuits and aspirations of students who identify as former foster youth, homeless or at risk for homelessness, students who were emancipated minors or in legal guardianship.

  
Support for Former Foster Care Youth  

Shoreline Community College collaborates with the State of Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC) to support former foster care students who enroll in college classes before the age of 22.  This support program is called Passport to Careers Promise Scholarship (Passport). Students must fill out the FAFSA/WASFA and have a complete financial aid file to be considered for this aid. Qualified students can receive quarterly funds from $900 - $1,500 to support their educational goals.

Support for Unaccompanied Homeless Youth  


Shoreline Community College collaborates with the State of Washington Student Achievement Council (WSAC)  to support unaccompanied homeless youth who are verified as experiencing homelessness on or after July 1st of the prior academic year, or during the current academic year, before age 22. This support program is called Passport to Careers Promise Scholarship (Passport). Students must fill out the FAFSA/WASFA and have a complete financial aid file to be considered for this aid. Qualified students can receive quarterly funds from $900 - $1,500 to support their educational goals.  
   
To qualify for the Passport to Careers program students must meet the criteria as listed below.

  • Must be a Washington State resident. 
  • Must have identified yourself as Unaccompanied Homeless Youth on your  FAFSA/WASFA  application. 
  • Must have been determined independent for financial aid eligibility due to your housing status as homeless youth. 
  • Must be enrolled at least half time (in 6 credits or more) in a financial aid eligible program before the age of 22. 
  • Must not have a bachelor’s degree.  

 

You do not have to be a Passport scholarship recipient to get help from the College’s designated support staff.

Who’s Eligible:

  • Have been in Washington State, federal, or tribal foster care after the age of 13.
  • Enroll at least half-time (6 credits) in an eligible college program before your 22nd birthday.
  • Maintain Washington State residency (WASFA applicants welcome)
  • Must be working toward earning your first college degree or certificate.
