What Are Scholarships?

Scholarships are a source of funding for your education. Scholarship funding is provided by generous donors and does not need to be paid back like a loan would. Scholarships are awarded through an annual application process to students who will be attending Shoreline in the following school year. The process is competitive, with 30-50% of applicants each year receiving a scholarship award typically ranging from $1,000 - $3,000.

Awards are based on academic merit, financial need, personal history, achievement, or specific areas of study. With one application, students are automatically considered for the majority of our available scholarships. We highly encourage all students to apply.

How Can I Get A Scholarship?

You are eligible to receive a scholarship if you:

  • Are or will be a Shoreline Community College student
  • Have a 2.0 GPA

I'm a current/prospective SCC student with a 2.0 GPA!

Great! Here are your next steps:

Submit a scholarship application through our scholarship platform, AwardSpring.

We accept applications January-March for the upcoming academic year. For example, applications for scholarships that will fund the 2026-2027 academic year can be submitted starting in January 2026.

You only need to submit one application! Based on your application information, AwardSpring will automatically put you into candidate pools for consideration of all scholarships you are eligible for.

Once you have submitted your application, check the AwardSpring homepage for any follow-up questions.

Some scholarships have follow-up questions. If you meet the qualifications for the scholarship based on your application, they may ask you to complete some additional questions in order to be put into the candidate pool. These questions are not mandatory, but not completing them means you won’t be considered for that specific scholarship.

Wait for award decisions to be announced over email.

Our Scholarship Review Committee will read scholarship applications in April and we will award in May. You will receive an email with your award decision. We send award decisions to all applicants, whether you are being offered a scholarship or not.

It's important that you monitor the email used for your AwardSpring account. Sometimes these emails go to spam – be sure to check during the dates that we announce it will go out. We do not guarantee a follow-up text or phone call will be made to you if you do not respond. If you don't accept a scholarship offer by the deadline given in your email, the scholarship may be reawarded.

Submit your scholarship acceptance paperwork.

If you are offered a scholarship, you will have 2-3 weeks to accept it and submit the paperwork through AwardSpring.

Attend classes.

We will work with Financial Aid to have your scholarship disbursed across Fall, Winter, and Spring (and Summer, if you request). All you need to do is register for your classes and attend. You will not receive funding for quarters you do not attend. Scholarships are only for the academic year you receive them in.

External Scholarships

There are a lot of scholarships available that are not run by the Foundation. Below are links to scholarship search engines, and advice on how to find scholarships for you and ensure the scholarship you're applying for is legit.

Don't Get Scammed!

Please visit the Federal Trade Commission's page on Scholarship and Financial Aid Scams.

You may find scholarship opportunities that look too good to be true. These opportunities may be scams. Hint: If you are asked to pay an application fee or if awards are "guaranteed," it is most likely a scam.

Scholarship FAQs

Can I Apply and Is It Worth It?

Scholarships are available to all students who will attend SC in the upcoming academic year. Scholarship criteria is based on financial need or merit and any student in good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA) may apply including full and part time students, Running Start students, and international students.

Students can apply for all scholarship opportunities using a single online application via our scholarship software - AwardSpring.

You do not need to research individual scholarships or apply for them individually – AwardSpring will automatically put you into candidate pools for scholarships you're eligible for based on the information provided in your application.

Yes. SCF scholarship criteria are based on financial need or merit.

Scholarships are considered part of your overall aid package and the amount you receive may be adjusted according to your aid limits or other financial aid requirements. Scholarships are applied after all other forms of non-loan aid (BFET, Pell and Opportunity grants, etc.) and before all loans.

Each year about 30-50% of our applicants receive a scholarship award that typically ranges from $1,000 - $3,000. We strive to award scholarships to as many students as possible and recommend every student applies! Tips for submitting a strong application can be found below and within the application itself.

How Do I Complete the Scholarship Application?

You can work on your application up until the application deadline. If you submit your application in February but decide later on that you want to make changes, you can go into AwardSpring, edit the application, and resubmit it up until the deadline.

AwardSpring will show you your progress as you complete each section. If you see "In Progress" on a section, that means you still have unanswered questions. Once everything says "Completed," you'll be able to submit the application.

When you've submitted the application, you'll see a message in AwardSpring saying "You did it! Nothing left to complete. Way to go."

To be considered for need-based scholarships, you must have a FAFSA or WASFA on file.

If you don't or can't submit a FAFSA/WASFA, you are still eligible for our merit-based scholarships.

Your application is scored separately for need-based and merit-based scholarships. Application reviewers will only see information from your application that they will be scoring.

For need-based scholarships: Short Answers only
For merit-based scholarships:
GPA, Awards and Extracurriculars, and Short Answers

The most important part of your application are your short answers. We are looking to see that you are committed to your goals at SC, that you can persist in your education when challenged, and that a scholarship will be an investment in your success. The easiest ways for you to be successful are to:

  • Read all instructional text provided throughout the application. The application is designed to help you understand what the review committee is looking for and make yourself a more competitive applicant.
  • Refer to the rubric
  • Make sure that you understand and have responded to the question. We want to get to know you. Answer the questions, give examples, let us see you and your work.
  • Reread and revise what you have written. Are your responses clear? Have you responded to the whole question?
  • Reach out to the SC Writing Studio . Student staff are standing by to talk with you, to help you plan, and to read your writing for this application.
  • Read the essay questions beforehand by checking the online application in AwardSpring.

We try to provide clear instructions in the application, but sometimes we miss something or you might want clarification. If you have a question you can always reach out to scholarships@shoreline.edu.

What To Expect If I Receive a Scholarship?

After the application deadline, the scholarship committee will review all completed applications and begin awarding scholarships. Award notifications typically go out 4-6 weeks after the application deadline.

Your Award Decision: We will send an email to the email address you used to sign into AwardSpring whether you are being offered a scholarship or not. Be sure there's no typos, and make sure to check it regularly! Make sure you check your spam folder as well. We cannot gurantee that a follow-up text or phone call will be made to you if you do not respond. If you don't accept a scholarship offer by the deadline given in your email, the scholarship may be reawarded.

Timeline: We send out award decisions in May. Updated information about when to expect your award decision may be sent out by email and/or posted on the scholarships webpage as the date gets closer.

Your scholarship will first be applied to your tuition balance. If any scholarship funding remains after your tuition is paid, it will be disbursed directly to you via BankMobile.

Annual scholarship funds are available for use during one academic year (Summer through Spring) only.

Scholarships are split evenly between Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. You have the option of including Summer quarter as well.

Your scholarship is disbursed through Financial Aid. Every quarter before the tuition due date, Financial Aid will place a hold on your account to keep you from being dropped for non-payment.

Your scholarship award will be applied sometime between the week before the quarter starts and the 10th day, depending on what kind of scholarship you receive and how busy Financial Aid is. You will not be dropped for nonpayment. After the scholarship and all other aid are applied, you will be responsible for any remaining balance.

All scholarship recipients must attend the Donors and Scholars Dinner in June.

Scholarship funding is provided to students by generous individuals who donate to the Foundation. These funds are gifts, and it's important to honor the people whose generosity makes this all possible. Recipients are allowed a +1 to join them at the dinner. More details will be provided upon being awarded a scholarship.
