Foundation Scholarship List
This is a list of scholarships managed by the SCC Foundation. Depending on available
funding, we may not offer every scholarship each year. You can find a list of scholarships
and qualifications for the current academic year in AwardSpring.

Automotive
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
This scholarship is intended for students enrolled in the General Motors Automotive Service Education Program (GM-ASEP) at Shoreline Community College.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
This scholarship is for students enrolled in the Automotive Program at Shoreline College.
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
Mark Andrew Galloway was a 2006 graduate of Monroe High School and Sno-Isle Auto Technician
Training Program, where he was Student of the Year and a member of the National Technical
Vocational Honor Society. He was working on his Associate of Arts degree from the
General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program at Shoreline Community College
at the time of his tragic death. At the time he was also working at Speedway Chevrolet
in Monroe as a Service Technician and Performance Consultant.
This scholarship was established in memory of Mark and is offered to a graduate, or
soon to be graduate, of the Sno-Isle Auto Technician Training Program, who has been
accepted into the GM-ASEP Program at Shoreline Community College.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
The Norton Family Automotive Scholarship was created by Larry Norton, Jr. to provide assistance to students taking training classes at the professional Automotive Training Center at Shoreline College.
Biotechnology
Type: Need-based Scholarship
This fund was created in memory of Dina Kovarik. Dina, as a faculty member in the
Biology and Biotechnology program for 8 years, contributed immensely to improving
the program and supporting Shoreline Community College students to reach their goals.
She was the driving force for the development and growth of Project Biotech (a series
of High School Biotech summer camps) which has become a transformative experience
for so many young students.
These scholarships are intended for students enrolled in the Biotechnology program
at Shoreline Community College.
Business
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
Created in memory of their father, a keen businessman as well as loving family man who loved the outdoors, this scholarship is intended for students enrolled in the Shoreline College Business Administration Program.
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
This scholarship is available to SCC students who are majoring in Business Administration; Business Intelligence & Data Analytics, or Purchasing & Supply Chain Management.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
Dorothy Ball Gough was an ardent supporter of Shoreline College. According to Dorothy, she was “not fortunate to have children, therefore, I had no expense of putting a child through school, so this is my way of helping.” Dorothy passed away in 2002 and left this gift to ensure future generations will receive support for school.
Clean Energy
Type: Need-based Scholarship
JD Humphreys was a 31-year-old Shoreline student in the Clean Energy Program, who was killed after being struck by a hit and run driver on October 21, 2013. This scholarship was established by faculty, staff, and students in the Clean Energy Program.
Dental Hygiene
Type: Need-based Scholarship
This scholarship was created in 2024 to honor the memory of Dr. Alvin Taniguchi, or
"Dr. T", as he was fondly known to his colleagues and patients.
A graduate of the University of Washington Dental School in 1963, Dr. T served in
the U.S. Army Dental Corps during the Vietnam war and eventually opened his own practice
at Redmond Parc Square Dental. As with all successful dental practices, Dr. T. relied
on the excellence of his clinical team. In recognition of the crucial role of dental
hygienists, the scholarship endeavors to support individuals on their way to professional
growth and a fulfilling career.

Karisa Cruz was a talented dental hygienist and a loving mom, wife, and daughter. This scholarship was created by people who loved Karisa. The purpose of this scholarship is to support a student enrolled in the Shoreline College Dental Hygiene Program.
Health Information Technology (HIIM)
Type: Need-based Scholarship
This fund was created thanks to an estate gift from Ellen Cadwell. These scholarships support Shoreline College students who are enrolled in the Health Information Technology AAAS degree or Coding certificate program.
Humanities
Type: Need-based Scholarship
his fund was established in 2013 following the passing of Shoreline College's beloved
and respected co-worker, Troy Wolff. Troy was a member of the English faculty at Shoreline
for 17 years and was chair of the English Department at the time of his tragic death.
In addition to teaching composition and literature, Troy was a published author. He
also taught in the college's Study Abroad programs taking students to Costa Rica,
Spain, Greece, and Turkey.
The scholarship supports Shoreline College students who focus on Humanities in their
studies.
Manufacturing
Type: Need-based Scholarship
Created with the intent of helping students move into high demand careers within the energy industry, this scholarship is awarded to students within Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, and Machining programs.
Medical Lab Technology (MLT)
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
This scholarship is intended for Shoreline College Medical Laboratory Technology students, who will be continuing as full-time students in the upcoming school year.
Music
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
This Scholarship supports students enrolled in an instrumental performing ensemble and/or instrumental private lessons, with preference given to students enrolled in both and with a declared music or music tech major.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
Established in 1998 by her daughter Sharon Benson, who was a former faculty member at SCC. This award supports students enrolled in the Shoreline Music Program.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
Established in memory of Michael Mitchell, an assistant conductor and associate conductor and music administrator at the Seattle Opera, this scholarship supports Shoreline College Music students.
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
This fund was established by the Shoreline College Music Department in memory of Peggy O'Coyne, who served as Music Department administrator from 1983 - 1990. The scholarship is intended for Shoreline College students who wish to pursue a degree and/or career in music.
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
This scholarship is for Music majors. Preference is given to Piano majors and/or students taking private piano lessons.
Nursing
Type: Need-based Scholarship
This scholarship was created in memory of Helen M. Blavat, Shoreline College Nursing Alumna, and Walter Blavat to assist students enrolled in the Nursing Program at Shoreline College.
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
Joan Heeter became a nurse after she attended Olympic College in her fifties. Her husband established this fund in memory of his wife after her passing. This scholarship is for nursing students.

This scholarship is for students enrolled in the Nursing program at Shoreline College.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
Established by Shoreline College alumna and nurse practitioner Dr. Julia Sarazine, this scholarship supports students enrolled in Shoreline’s Nursing Program. Inspired by Julia’s own journey from business to nursing and her dedication to mindfulness and service, she hopes this scholarship will help students pursue their education with confidence, compassion, and a clear sense of purpose.

This scholarship was established by Russell Mallett in memorial to his mother Margaret Mallett, who was a registered nurse. Students enrolled in the Nursing program at Shoreline College and active in their community are eligible for this scholarship.

This scholarship is for students enrolled in the Nursing Program at Shoreline College.

Established in 2009, this scholarship supports students enrolled in the Shoreline College Nursing Program.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
This scholarship was established in memory of Tammi by her family and friends, to
provide assistance to students in the Shoreline College Nursing Program.
Tammi O'Brien Shanks graduated from Shoreline College's School of Nursing in 1996
and worked at Northwest Hospital as a surgical nurse for 12 years. In 2001 she was
diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The hardest thing she ever had to do
was to give up her nursing career due to her disability. She was patiently awaiting
a lung transplant at the time of her death. Her life was devoted to serving and inspiring
others.

Established by an anonymous donor who believes in the power of education and the Shoreline Nursing Program, this fund is for students enrolled in the Nursing Program at Shoreline College.

Vivian Wellman Batty graduated from Edison Nursing School in the early 1960's. She entered nursing school when she was in her early 40's. Her graduation fulfilled a life-long dream to become a nurse and be of service to others. Most of her nursing career was spent at the VA Hospital on Beacon Hill, and it is there that she served many of the veterans from the Vietnam war. She dutifully cared for all her patients. On occasion she would bring one of her six children to visit some of the young veterans, mostly to show appreciation for their service.
STEM
Type: Need-based Scholarship
This fund was created thanks to a gift from 7X24 Exchange Northwest Chapter, Inc. These scholarships are intended for Shoreline Community College students who have enrolled in a STEM program and demonstrate an interest in the Data Center industry.
Type: Merit-based Scholarship
This scholarship is for Shoreline CC students who plan on continuing their studies at an accredited four-year college or university and majoring in pure Mathematics.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
PSE’s Powerful Scholars program helps students achieve energized careers within the energy industry or will fuel future careers in natural gas by providing annual scholarship funds. Together, we’re helping to create a clean energy future, while maintaining reliability, resiliency, safety, and affordability.
General
Type: Need-based Scholarship
Founded by Mart Bert in 1988, the Biella Foundation provides grants to all 34 Washington State community colleges for student scholarships and emergency aid. Mart strongly believed in learning, and his interest in education and supporting young people to lead good lives is honored through the annual awarding of scholarships.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
Don and Brenda Mallett raised their family in Shoreline and worked tirelessly and selflessly to help and strengthen their community. Brenda, a dedicated educator, and Don, dedicated to family law, created this scholarship to help people who want to better their lives through education.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
Edwin T. Pratt was an accomplished civil rights leader and the Executive Director
of the Seattle Urban League. He stood up for school desegregation and fair housing.
He moved with his wife and young daughter to a nearly all-white Shoreline in 1959
to highlight and bring attention to residential segregation. Housing covenants and
redlining prevented the sale of homes to African-Americans and other minorities.
Pratt was assassinated in front of his Shoreline home on January 26, 1969, at the
age of 38. He was survived by his wife, Bettye, and two young children, William and
Miriam. His murder remains unsolved. This scholarship supports students enrolled at
Shoreline College, who are graduates of Shorewood High School or Shorecrest High School.

This fund was created thanks to a bequest from Eva Gordon's Estate. Eva Gordon was a hard-working woman who was ahead of her time. She was self-made and had the good fortune of making wise investment choices in her lifetime. Ms. Gordon did not have any formal education herself, but she always had a soft spot for children and always wanted to support children in need.

Ina V. Knutsen was appointed to the very first Board of Trustees for Shoreline College. She served in that role for nearly 25 years. Ina was dedicated to education and Shoreline College. This fund was established through Ina's will.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
The Noreens have been involved with Shoreline College for over 50 years. Additionally, they have lived in the Shoreline community since 1968, giving their time and knowledge to supporting the city and its residents. To honor their lifelong commitment to Shoreline and the College, Ken and Pearl, their family, and friends established this scholarship to help other Shoreline residents afford the costs of school. The Noreen family hope to foster the spirit of community service by selecting recipients who have a history in volunteerism and community involvement.

This scholarship is for students who are residents of King County.

This scholarship was established in memory of Betty's daughter, Linda Lee Hale.
Type: Need-based Scholarship
The Lois M. Curtis scholarship is designed to support students as they find their voice and enter the academic debate about the many challenges our society faces. As our world changes rapidly, we need individuals who can clearly express their world view especially if it differs from that of the dominant culture. Lois Curtis was a long-time public servant on Bainbridge Island serving on the school board, planning commission, and city council. Originally from Indiana, her studies at Stanford in the 1950s opened her eyes to the complicated nature of the world and she never stopped trying to make it better.

Margaret Svec was a member of the English faculty at Shoreline College from 1964, when the college opened, until 1978. She won awards for her poetry, and her work was published in magazines and journals. After her retirement, Margaret actively supported the Women's Center as a presenter, mentor, advocate, advisory committee member, and donor. Margaret died at the age of 99 in September 2012.

Established in 2020, this scholarship was established to provide students with financial assistance so they may focus on their education and future.

This scholarship was established in 2014 following the death of Shoreline College's much-loved counselor, Martin Olsen. Marty began his professional career at Shoreline as a Veterans' Advisor after serving in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed having the opportunity to work with students on their educational and personal goals and took pleasure in witnessing their growth.

Thanks to a donation from PepsiCo, we are able to offer this scholarship to students enrolled at Shoreline College.
