MCAT and other tests preparation support
What tests are required?
We understand the challenge of professional school is digesting and learning a huge volume of information in a short time. PBS will help students develop effective study strategies to learn, retain, and comprehend the biomedical sciences. Each health professional field designates which test are used as part of the application process.
List of the most common health profession exams:
- Dentistry, DDS: DAT (Dental Application Test) – not all schools require this
- Medicine, MD and DO: MCAT (Medical College Application Test)
- Physician Assistant: PACAT– not all schools require this
- Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Veterinary Medicine – GRE – General Test (General Record Exam GRE is required by some but not all schools)
- Optometry: OAT
The DAT, MCAT, PACAT, and OAT include significant science content, such that most of the science prerequisite courses need to be completed before taking the test. In addition, there are sections in verbal reasoning and/or critical thinking. Note: the DAT and PACAT do not include physics in the science sections, but the MCAT does.
The GRE General Test includes Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. This content is not specifically related to prerequisite courses, though it will help to have completed college mathematics and statistics, as well as a broad range of liberal arts courses.

SCI 287- Critical Reading Analysis for MCAT, GRE (1-credit) – spring quarter
Course description: This seminar is for students preparing for the MCAT, GRE or other advanced level test. The course focuses on preparation for the MCAT Critical Analysis and Reading Skills section and the GRE Verbal Reasoning section. Included are test format, free and low cost resources, critical reasoning skills, and test strategies. Mandatory P/NC grading.
Note: strong Critical Reading Analysis skills enhances student performance in other sections of these tests, as well as learning in your academic classes. Students are encouraged to take this as early as possible.
MCAT:
- Science 287 Critical Reading Analysis for MCAT, GRE (1 credit) – spring quarter
- Science 288 MCAT Preparation and the Medical School Application (1 credit) – fall quarter
This seminar is for students preparing for medical school. The focus of this course is on the MCAT and the application process. Topics: MCAT content learning strategies, free and low cost resources, needs assessment, preparation plan development, medical school admission, school selection, and peer and instructor support. Mandatory P/NC grading. - Science 289 MCAT Test Practice and Strategies (1 credit) – winter, summer quarters
This seminar is for students preparing for the MCAT. The seminar focuses on test taking practice, needs assessment, test and preparation strategies, peer and instructor support. Mandatory P/NC grading.
Mock Test Days
In coordination with Shoreline’s Testing Center, we have three to four mock test days each year; free.
Students bring their own laptop and practice test. Testing Center staff hosts the day much like a real test day, including: check your ID, locker for your phone and other, official break times, etc. This is a valued opportunity to assess your learning needs using the results, and practice your test taking skills and endurance.
