A learning community is a support program that centers retention strategies needed for success throughout students' identity development and empowerment in community college. At the heart of these programs, a learning community aims to increase academic support by stabilizing students in the community as it guides its students on a clear pathway to success.

Through the yCSE Learning Communities, students may enroll in a COL 101 course, a holistic college success course that supports students by centering nontraditional strategies for academic and personal achievement. The course focuses on building essential college success skills such as goal setting, time management, effective study strategies, critical thinking, and navigating campus resources, while also encouraging students to reflect on their identities, backgrounds, and lived experiences as part of their growth. Students explore potential career pathways and begin drafting a personalized Education Plan aligned with their academic and professional goals. Students complete their Education Plan in collaboration with an academic advisor who also serves as their course instructor, ensuring integrated and consistent guidance throughout their first-term experience and beyond.

Haa Latseen

Haa Latseen is a dedicated learning community for Native American, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian college students. It’s a space where students build meaningful connections, support one another, and thrive in higher education together. Rooted in the traditional Tlingit value Haa Latseen, “our strength” the community encourages students to grow as learners, leaders, and to navigate today’s world while remembering our Indigenous identity is at the core of everything we do.
