The Writing Studio

Need tutoring? Find us online through Starfish, or visit the Student Learning Center in room 4228!

Most tutoring takes places in-person on campus. To see on campus tutor schedules and make an appointment, log in to Starfish, scroll down to Your Services, and click on the Student Learning Center. You will now see the Student Learning Center profile. The Team Members section displays all tutors and the subjects and classes they can tutor, and allows you to make an appointment for in-person services in the Library. For more information about accessing tutoring, visit the Tutoring Services page.

The Writing Studio offers one-on-one tutorial assistance and instructional resources in a friendly, safe environment where students in all disciplines can be engaged in their individual writing and learning processes.

The Studio's support for students is provided by a committed, caring staff of both students and faculty who work to create a collaborative environment that welcomes diverse views and encourages student learning.

How We Can Help

To make an appointment for an online meeting with a writing consultant, or to submit an assignment for written feedback, please go to Starfish.

Assistance with any kind of writing

Students can work with learning assistants on:

  • college reading strategies
  • study skills
  • speech projects
  • research papers
  • other writing assignments from any class

Writing consultants do not proofread student papers. Instead, they teach students how to analyze their writing and find more of their own errors, which often takes more than one session. They do not guarantee good or better grades, but as you work more on your writing, your instructors will probably notice, and you will be better prepared to communicate more effectively.

One-On-One Help

The Studio provides free, one-to-one assistance with writing for any course and helps students better understand their reading assignments and develop useful study strategies.

ENGL 089 and ENGL 098 are individualized courses designed to support students at their own level. Students sign up for these variable credit (1-3), continuous enrollment courses to improve their writing, reading, and study skills and gain assistance in their other English classes. For example, many ENGL 101 students also take ENGL 098, so that they can get help with their 101 assignments and get ENGL 098 credit, too.
