College 101 Exemptions

College 101 is a required course for all new AA-DTA with some exemptions

When in doubt, students should seek the advice of an advisor. 

  • Transfer in with more than 30 credits
  • Transfer in with College 101 or equivalent from another college
  • Completed College 90
  • Enrolled in CECO program
  • Veteran with GI Bill funding

Essay Criteria

Outside this, any student may choose to write an essay with their career and college plans that meets all of the following criteria. Submit essay

Criteria

Choose an academic pathway by exploring individual strengths, values, interests, and personal and career goals.

Essay that meet criteria include all
  • Student identifies at least 2-3 strengths, 2-3 values, and 2-3 interests related to career.
  • Educational Plan completed in full and signed by an Academic Advisor.
  • Student utilizes goal setting strategy to identify at least one personal and one career goal.
  • Student shows thought/decision making process of how they utilized information about their strengths, values, interests, and personal and career goals to pick an academic pathway.

Identify and use campus resources in support of student’s educational goals.

Student can identify at least 2-3 campus resources. Student demonstrates understanding of how utilizing each of these resources can support the student's educational goals.

Collaborate with diverse peers and instructor(s) to foster interpersonal skills and a sense of belonging.

Student demonstrates understanding of the importance of diverse peer and instructor interactions in the learning process by actively participating in COL 101, their other college coursework, and/or the campus community. Student may demonstrate this through various methods such as active participation in class discussions and group projects, utilizing peer mentoring or instructor office hours, becoming involved on campus (such as active participation in a club), etc.

Identify and develop skills for professional and academic success, including specific practical and applicable strategies.

Student can identify at least 1-2 specific skills for professional and academic success. Student demonstrates understanding of how these skills can contribute to professional and academic success. (Examples may include critical thinking or a specific strategy for time management, professional communication, stress management, etc.)

Student demonstrates ability to reflect on their experience utilizing the skills for professional and academic success that were identified above. Student may share their initial impressions vs experience after continued use of the skill, what went well and growth areas, personal helpfulness of the skill, planned future use, etc.
