Underage Admissions
Shoreline Community College (SCC) offers the option to underage students who are still in middle school or high school and not in another approved “dual credit” program, such as Running Start, to take classes at SCC in accordance with our Admission Guidelines specified in our College Policy.
As a policy, Shoreline Community College does not admit students under the age of 18, unless participating through a specialized program such as Running Start. Under some circumstances, special consideration may be given to students who petition for an underage admissions exception who are under the age of 18, have not graduated from high school (or GED equivalent), and who are not taking part in the Running Start program.
Students that follow our Underage Admissions process are responsible for understanding and adhering to all college policies. This is an admissions process and not a program. Students who wish to follow the Underage Admissions process have to be enrolled in a school district or homeschool network.
Steps to Getting Started!
- Apply for Admissions:
Apply online in the Online Admission Application Portal (OAAP). Your acceptance email or letter will include your EMPLID number (student number) and PIN. Note: If you already have an existing Shoreline Community College (SCC) student account AND a ctcLink student ID number, you can skip this step.
- Steps for starting a new application:
- You will need to select Shoreline Community College as your intended college.
- You will be enrolling as a First Year
- You can select either Academic or Non-Award Seeking as your intended program. We recommend selecting Academic if you will participate in Running Start in the future or take classes at Shoreline Community College after high school graduation.
- You will select the term you intend to start classes. The “term” is the quarter you wish to attend, such as Summer, Fall, Winter, or Spring.
- If you chose Academic as your program, you will need to select a degree or certificate and a focus area. If you chose Non-Award Seeking, you will select Non-degree – Other as the intended degree or certificate and there will not be an academic focus area.
- It can take 2-3 business days to process your application. If you do not hear from
us within 5 business days, please email enrollmentservices@shoreline.edu.
- For the high school information section of the online application:
- Search for your high school by typing the name. Make sure the County, State, and City information match your high school’s. If you are a homeschooled or middle school student, you will need to select Shoreline Community College as your high school.
- Once you select your high school, the address information will auto-populate.
- For attendance dates, you will need to indicate the attended from date at the high school or homeschool or middle school (September 1 is recommended) and the attended to date will be the date you’re submitting the application.
- You will select your current high school grade as your high school completion status. If you are a middle school student, you will select Ninth Grade. If you are a current high school senior, you will select Twelfth Grade.
- For the high school information section of the online application:
2 Submit the Underage Admissions Quarterly Release Form:
Students must complete an Underage Admissions Quarterly Release Form, as well as the High School Release Form by a school district, school, or homeschool official. A PDF of this form can be found below these steps.
3 Complete Placement:
Students must meet placement requirements for the college and all prerequisites for the course(s) they wish to take for the quarter. Step-by-step instructions on our placement policies and procedures can be found on our Placement and Prerequisites page.
Students who have already taken the ACT or SAT may use their scores for placement. If a student has not yet taken a placement exam, students will do the following process for English placement:
- The student will be referred to the English Department, where a Faculty Program Coordinator (FPC) will arrange a time to complete a reading/writing task.
- The student will be provided with a short document to read and will be asked to write a response to a prompt related to the reading.
- The student will return their response to the FPC.
- A faculty member will review the response and determine placement.
4 Review our Class Schedule and Complete the Necessary Steps for Registration:
- Look up the class(es) you wish to register for in our Class Schedule under your intended quarter.
- As an Underage Admissions student, you will not be able to register for classes online. Forward all emails to enrollmentservices@shoreline.edu for manual registration.
