The Social Sciences Division oversees a wide variety of programs, both university transfer and professional-technical, including history, psychology, economics and more. We are located in the FOSS Building 5000, on the 3rd floor. If you have an interest in our programs, please stop by room 5329 for more information or see your advisor in his or her office in FOSS.

Areas of Study

We offer a wide variety of courses in the division. Classes are offered in different formats, both on-campus and online. On-campus classes are scheduled throughout the day with morning, afternoon and evening offerings.

Shoreline offers Social Sciences courses with Transfer Program options and Professional/Technical Program options.

Learning Outcomes

Students in social science courses will demonstrate competence in a substantial majority
of the following outcomes:

1. Engage in critical analyses of social forces, issues, events and institutions.
2. Critically analyze how social forces, issues, events and institutions affect individuals.
3. Apply general theoretical principles of individual and social behavior to practical situations.
4. Use appropriate social science research methods based upon systematic quantitative and/or qualitative analysis.
5. Understand the role of individuals and institutions in generating cooperation, conflict, exploitation and oppression locally and globally.
6. Participate in society as an informed, intentional and thoughtful citizen.
7. Recognize general patterns of human societies across time and space.
8. Understand the influence of biological, personal and social factors on the behavior of individuals.
9. Logically construct and evaluate arguments both orally and in writing.
10. Generate and test hypotheses based on empirical observations.

Special Programs at Shoreline

Equity and Social Justice includes American Ethnic Studies, Gender & Women's Studies, and Multicultural Studies.  Equity has to do with everyone, regardless of race, social class, and gender, having access to fair and equal treatment under the law. Social Justice extends the concept of equity to include human rights as part of the social contract.

The Global Pathways Program provides students with rich experience to broaden and deepen their understanding of today's global community.

The Honors College is designed to offer a challenging curriculum for students planning to transfer to four-year institutions of higher learning or who simply wish to deepen their college experience.
