The Writing & Learning Studio (TWLS)

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use The Writing & Learning Studio (TWLS)?

All students, staff, and faculty are welcome to use the Center's resources, including instructional handouts, textbooks, and the support of learning assistants. During any one quarter, the TWLS typically serves students in over 50 courses across campus.

I'm in English 101. Why would I want to take ENG 099? Isn't that a lower level class?

ENG 099 is an individualized course design to support you at your own level. For example, many Eng 101 students also take ENG 099, so that they can get help with their 101 assignments and get ENG 099 credit, too. You can also take ENG 099 even if you're not in an English class to work on your composition skills, grammar, or other aspects of writing.

(Non-native English speakers must be in ESL Level 5 or higher to register for ENG 089 or ENG 099.)

Do I have to register for credit to use The Writing & Learning Studio?

No, registering for credit is not required. All of the Center's resources--except for the computers--are available to non-credit students. (To use the Center's computers, you must be registered for credit in the Center.)

What do learning assistants do?

Students can work with learning assistants on college reading strategies, study skills, speech projects, research papers, or other writing assignments from any class. Learning assistants enjoy working with students at any stage of writing (inventing, drafting, revising, editing). They can explain instructors' general expectations for college writing, but they depend on students to reveal an instructor's goals for an assignment. The only person who can tell students how to fulfill all of the requirements of a particular assignment is the instructor.

Learning assistants do not proofread student papers. Instead, they teach students how to analyze and improve their own writing, which often takes more than one session. They do not guarantee good or better grades, but as you work more on your writing, your instructors will probably notice, and you will be better prepared to communicate more effectively.

How can The Writing & Learning Studio help me?

The Center can assist you in improving your writing techniques, reading speed, grammar, punctuation, memory, concentration, and other important skills related to learning. In other words, the TWLS can help you learn more, succeed in school, and even enjoy the process!

All SCC students are welcome at the TWLS! Students getting 4.0 GPAs use the Center regularly. Students who aren't passing their classes use the Center, too, to work on their skills. Books, reference materials, handouts, and tutorial assistance are available in the TWLS to all students. In fact, the TWLS typically serves students in over 50 different courses every quarter.
