Student Programs

Start a Club

New clubs are very easy to begin at Shoreline Community College. They are recognized by the Student Senate of Student Government (phone 206 546 4541). The Student Body Association Constitution provides simple guidelines under Article XVII, Section !, #2 for starting new clubs):

Article XVII:

Clubs and Organizations

Section 1:

Category I activity groups: A category I activity group, is a club or organization that has been granted recognition by the Student Senate, according to College Policy 5200

  1. The purpose of category I clubs is to improve the quality of student life and to provide social, cultural, recreational or educational experiences, leadership opportunities, and academic and retention support networks for the student members.
  2. Each new category I club is required to submit a charter Constitution to the SBA Senate, and a signed petition giving the names and student numbers of 10 or more Shoreline students who intend to participate in the new club. These documents will be reviewed by the Senate Constitution and By Laws Committee, which will ensure that the club purposes and structure meet the guidelines outlined in Article XVII, Section #1 (above) and the purposes of the Student Body Association outlined in Article II of this Constitution. Following the review of the club constitution by the Constitution and By Laws Committee, recognition will granted to new clubs by a vote of the full Senate. New clubs may then apply to the Senate for funding through the Senate Contingency Fund, or the annual budgeting process, outlined in Article XVIII (Finance).
  3. Category I clubs may supplement the classroom experiences of Shoreline students by providing learning opportunities that would not normally be available within the classroom setting. As a general guideline, participation in these clubs should not be contingent upon enrollment in specific programs or classes. Safety considerations, licensing requirements, or other circumstances, which protect student interests, may create exceptions to this guideline.
  4. All category I clubs are advised to hold an activity or maintain an informational table in the Pagoda Union Building on at least one occasion each quarter (excluding summer)
Club meeting hours and locations should be posted on campus at least 48 hours prior to meetings.
  5. Category I Clubs must maintain a roster of 10 active members. Clubs that fall below this requirement shall be subject to review by the Senate Budget Committee, and revocation of their budgets.

Section 2:

Category II activity groups: A Category II organization is a group or organization that has been established by action of the Board of Trustees or College President, according to College Policy 5200.

  1. Category II organizations will be budgeted according to the established percentages specified in Article XVIII, finance.
  2. Category II organizations may supplement the classroom experiences of Shoreline students by providing learning opportunities that would not normally be available within the classroom. As a general guideline, participation in these clubs should be open to all students and should not be contingent upon enrollment in specific programs or classes. Safety considerations, licensing requirements, or other circumstances, which protect student interests, may create exceptions to this guideline.
  3. Category II organizations are required to hold an activity or maintain an information table in the Pagoda Union Building on at least one occasion each quarter (excluding summer).
