Course Content

We are going to cover the following topics this quarter. Be sure to keep up with the material covered in class. It is strongly recommended that you read material before it is covered in class. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out all information from the class you missed, including material covered, HW & projects assigned, quizzes done & any other announcements made.

Course Organization

NOTE: Activities & Home Works (HW) may carry less weight towards the course grade but they are your main tools to learn the course material. So do them regularly & do not skip any. In case you missed one do it at home to get the most out of this course.

Projects & HWs are always due on the Quiz-day. Check the Quiz-day part for more information.

Home Works (HW):
  • Home work from the text will be assigned, collected on the day of the quiz (unless mentioned otherwise). They will be graded & returned within a week.
  • All HWs are posted online. I will also email them when we start working on the corresponding sections.
  • If you want to move ahead feel free to do so. You can turn in your HW earlier. But they won't be graded earlier.
  • HWs should be turned in during the class. But you can turn them in up to 5:00 pm in my mailbox at the FOSS building (5000) without being late.
  • If you are using excel or word to do your HW I would prefer if you email them to me rather than giving me hard copies. That will save paper & time. Deadline for turning in HW through email is midnight of due date.
  • The grade will be for attempting all problems. So to be sure check your answers with your class mates or the solution manual.
  • Grace period for any HW is one week from the due date. HWs turned in later than that will get less credit.
It is highly advised that you do not wait for the weekend to do your HW but do them as & when we cover those portions in class. Since there is no fixed "Quiz-day" of the week, you are required to be up to speed with the class.

Activities:
  • Activities will be short projects which will be assigned in class, before, during or after discussing a chapter.
  • You will typically be asked to do something at home. It can be a small experiment, data collection or a little bit of research.
  • You are expected to bring the results to class (if it involves data) or email me in advance (if it involves a report). We will typically have discussion around these results / reports.
  • Activities will be due within a day or two of assigning them.
  • These are integral part of the lectures. So if you miss one you need to talk to me as to if & how you can make it up.
  • Activities might be posted online, but not necessarily. You are expected to get them in class. So that is another incentive to attend classes.
Projects:
  • There will be 6 Projects, one for each quiz.
  • All Projects will be available online (5 are already). You will be able to get them from the course website.
  • They are geared to help you learn better & faster. In particular, Projects test you for things which are difficult to test during a timed quiz.
  • This includes but is not limited to how you use your calculator & computer (if necessary). I would expect you to include spreadsheets & calculator screen-shots as well as explain the steps you used in your calculator.
  • Projects are due on the Quiz-days.
  • But to make sure you are on the right track, there are earlier due date on the day by day "Plan". That way you can get feedback on your work before the quiz & can be better prepared for the quiz. You are STRONGLY encouraged to turn in your projects by the earlier due dates on the day-by-day “Plan”.
  • If you are using excel or word to do your HW I would prefer if you email them to me rather than giving me hard copies. That will save paper & time. Deadline for turning in Projects through email is midnight of due date.
  • Grace period for any Project is one week from the due date. Projects turned in later than that will get less credit.
  • All Projects will be graded & returned within 1 week.
If you want you can turn in HW’s, Activities & Projects in electronic format through email. In fact, if you use Excel in your work, I would prefer you email them to me. That will save paper & time. The deadline for turning these in as attachments on email is midnight of the due dates.

Quizzes:
  • As soon as we finish a substantial portion (typically 2-6 chapters) of the syllabus there will be a quiz on it. There is no fixed "Quiz-day" of the week.
  • However the Quiz-days are mentioned in the day by day "Plan". Please note: this is only a tentative one & the actual Quiz-days may differ depending upon how fast / slow we progress.
  • I will remind the class one day before the Quiz-day.
  • You are expected to have your own graphing calculator on for each quiz.
  • All quizzes will be graded & returned within 1 week.
  • The worst quiz-score will be dropped from all the quizzes that you take, i.e. if you take only 5 quizzes by the last day of instruction, 4 quiz scores will be used towards your course grade.
  • All solutions of the quizzes will be posted online by the next weekend.
  • If you miss any quiz, talk to me ASAP. I'll decide whether you can retake that depending on the situation.
  • If you know you will miss a quiz ahead of time, let me know ASAP. That'll ensure greater chance of a makeup quiz.
Quiz-day:
  • Bring your graphing calculator.
  • Please staple your work if it has multiple pages. Otherwise I will not be responsible if pages get lost.
  • Staple HW separately from Projects.
  • Do NOT staple each chapter of the HW separately. I want the whole HW stapled in one bunch.
  • You are supposed to turn in HW & Project in class. Typically once the quiz starts, I go round the class & pick them up. So keep your HW & Projects outside when you start the quiz.
  • Typically we will discuss few HW problems before the quiz. If you want to work on those problems after the quiz, you can do that. But you need to turn in your Project & HW by 5:00 pm in my mailbox. If I get your HW or Project later than that, I will record it as a "late" submission.

Course Grade
  • The course will be graded on a linear scale with 90% = 4.0 & 70% = 2.0 with exams etc. having the weight mentioned in the chart below.
  • Your actual grade might be slightly higher depending on my understanding of your statistical abilities.

Quizzes 50%
Projects 30%
Activities 10%
Home Works 10%
Total 100%
