Student Body Association – 2008-2009
Office: PUB --9301
FAQ's
The Student Body Association serves
as the recognized representative of Shoreline Community College
students on campus. Student leaders have the opportunity to
address the college Board of Trustees, staff members and governance
committees on issues they deem important, to serve on faculty
tenure committees and and faculty and administrative hiring
committees and to participate in developing the strategic plans,
policies and priorities of the college. Student government
also allocates funds to student clubs and organizations, recognizes
new clubs and organizations and provides support and advocacy
for these groups on campus.
Parking and Transportation:
Q: Why don’t we have lines marking parking spaces in
the gravel parking lots?
A:
Painted lines in the gravel parking areas would either wash off or
be destroyed by vehicles very quickly. This means that the college
would have to continually reline these areas.Other responses to
common parking questions can be found on the FAQ parking sheet that
we have provided alongside.
Q: Is it possible for us to have subsidized bus
passes?
A:
The Student Government has designated a task force to tackle this
question. They are actively working with the campus administration
to find out how to make this happen.
Classes and Classroom Dynamics:
Q: How can we stop disruptive behavior in our
classrooms?
A:
The professors have the authority to deal with disruptive behavior
and may do so at their discretion. If there is a problem with a
classroom dynamic, let your professor know about it.
Q: Can we have more textbooks put on reserve in the
library?
A:
The school does not have enough money in its budget to pay for
reserved books for each class. Most of the books that are on
reserve were put there by the professors themselves. In most cases,
these were extra books that the professors received or books that
they purchased with their own money and donated.
Q: Who do I talk to about having more diverse
classes, different class times or more evening classes?
A:
The first person to talk to would be your professors. Let them know
that you have ideas. The Academic Affairs department of the college
makes decisions about classes, but they first have to be
communicated. In order for classes to change the professors and
officials will need your support.
Q: Why doesn’t the college offer dance classes?
A:
The College does offer dance classes. They are offered through the
PE department. Dance class options include: Jazz dance, world
dance, voice-dance, hip-hop dance and ballroom dancing.
Clubs:
Q: We need more clubs!
A:
Start one! In order to start a club you would need to collect ten
signatures of people who want join the club, draw up a constitution
for the club, get an advisor and present this to the Student
Government’s Constitution and Bylaws committee. If you have any
questions contact the Campus Ambassador program which can be found
in room 2937 of the Student Annex.
Q: The clubs need more money!
A:
Clubs can always request more money. They need to fill out the
appropriate forms, which can be found in room 2937, and turn
everything in to the Student Government Treasurer in room 2935. If
you have any questions contact the Campus Ambassador program using
the information above.
Miscellaneous:
Q: Where can I find condoms?
A:
We actually do have FREE condoms available in the
Women’s center at the lower level of the library, behind the
computer lab. There’s a bowl of them there so feel free to take
one.
Q: What about medical/dental insurance?
A:
The school offers medical and dental insurance.
Information to the right.
Every Tuesday, somebody is stationed in the lower level of the
library around 11:30 am to discuss cheaper insurance rates and
different plans. For more information please go the Women’s Center
or Multicultural center. They are a great source of knowledge and
help. Use them!
Q: I want a swimming pool!
A:
The school actually does have a swimming pool! Ok,
not really on campus but students can actually go swimming at the
Helene Madison Pool in Shoreline for only $1. For more information
look to the right or contact the PE department.
Q: More events!
A:
There will be a new Arts and Entertainment director
soon. When that happens hopefully there will be more events on
campus like dances, shows, music and celebrations.
However, there are several events held on campus already. Please
refer to the Student Activities calendar and the events calendar on
the shoreline website.
http://www.shoreline.edu/EventsCalendarSC/ and
http://shoreline.edu/eventscalendar.html .
Q: Where are the bike racks?
A:
Currently bike racks can be found by the 3000 building, the 1000
building and the racks by the 2500 building are going to be moved to
the 1700 building because they are not being used.
Food:
Q: “Where can we find food now?” There’s no food
around campus!
A:
We understand your concern and hopefully, when the
PUB opens, this will no longer be a problem.
- There is a Shuttle
that travels from campus to Central Market where there is a much
wider variety of foods.
Q: “I’m Starving! I want more Food! More diverse food
choices!” Can we get more food?
A:
The school is currently working on getting more diverse options for
the PUB so hopefully, when it opens during Winter Quarter, there
will be more options that will cater to several different tastes
including vegetarian, Asian, American food… etc. There will also be
a café inside the PUB. It’s gonna be pretty cool!
Entertainment:
Q: “Will we have a game room?”
A:
Yes! There will be a game room in the PUB. What’s
going to be in it is still to be discussed. But we have some really
good ideas!
Q: “What about ESPN?”
A:
We are unsure whether it is possible to get ESPN in the PUB or game
room. However, there will be video screens around the PUB and we are
not yet sure what these will be used for.
Study Area:
Q: “We want more study rooms!”
A:
There will be more study areas available when the PUB opens. There
will be two Quiet/Study Lounges inside.
-Currently study
areas can be found in the 3rd Floor of the Library called
the Sanctuary and in the back of the Library.
- Students can also
request to reserve a room on campus. Contact the Academic Affairs
department.
Technology:
Q: “We want more computers!”
A:
The new PUB will also have a number of terminals available for
students. Also, Student Government is working on getting the
computer rooms in the 2nd Floor of the library open for
students.
Employment:
Q: “What about more jobs on campus?”
A:
It is with high hopes from the administration and student government
that the opening of the PUB will offer more employment opportunities
for students as there will be more positions available. Several of
these positions will be in food service.
Library:
Q: Why won’t the library open up both ends of the
lower computer lab?
A:
The computer lab employees need to control student traffic in and
out of the computer lab.
Q: Why can’t students use the upper level computer
lab when classes aren’t being held in there?
A:
The upper computer lab is not fully equipped, like the lower lab is,
and the college would need to hire more staff to monitor this space
and that has not been budgeted in.
Security
Q: “What’s going on with security on campus? I don’t
see a lot of security officers around. How do I contact security?”
A:
There are two
officers that patrol the campus during the weekdays and one during
the weekend. They walk around campus in blue security uniforms.
The phone number for safety and security is 546-4633. Their
emergency number when the office is closed is 206-235-5860. Please
save these numbers! You never know when you’ll need them.
