Safety and Security

Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Department of Safety and Security to provide campus security services which enhance and support the Strategic Plan of Shoreline Community College. (Our goal is to promote a safe and welcoming environment that recognizes, and is respectful of diversity, and to improve the quality of campus life for students, and faculty and staff, learning and working at Shoreline Community College by working in partnership with the campus community to provide the most professional, effective campus safety services possible.) All of this must be done in a learning environment and a physical climate that support excellence.

Shoreline Community College is a community unto itself. All members of the community – students, faculty and staff – contribute to making Shoreline a safe, nurturing environment for learning. As much as we might like, we cannot isolate ourselves from the world that surrounds our campus. The Shoreline neighborhood that surrounds our campus is one of the safest in the City of Shoreline. Yet, like any place in our modern times, there are dangers. For this reason the Department of Campus Safety and Security is committed to ensuring the safety of students, employees, and visitors through effective policies and procedures, educational programming, and community involvement.

There are four main aspects to our goals:

Safe and secure: To create an environment conducive to learning by providing continual patrol coverage, complete case investigation and daily inspection of security systems and equipment. To engage in campus crime prevention and public education activities. To provide an operational Safety and Security Department whose primary function is to serve and protect the campus community.
Crime prevention: To provide educational programs to the campus, which cultivate safety and security awareness. Implement a philosophy of community oriented problem solving in which security officers, students, and faculty and staff are equal partners in the crime prevention, and quality of life efforts.
Parking: To administer parking program, which accommodates the daily and special event, needs of the campus. To maintain a revenue flow which assures the maintenance of existing parking, develops additional parking and provides for alternate forms of campus community transportation. Provide efficient and courteous services to the public and campus community, including traffic movement, resolution of non-criminal disputes, and emergency assistance as needed.
Work Place Safety: To create a perception of individual responsibility for day-to-day work activities. The use of meetings, reports, programs and recognition of employees will cultivate safe working habits.
