Shoreline's distinguished piano faculty are devoted and successful teachers as well as active performers. Its six faculty members typically teach more than 30 private students and 150 students in Class Piano each quarter. The program has scholarships available for private lessons, regular scheduled Master Classes, quarterly student recital opportunities, and jury examinations for students enrolled in private lessons.

Shoreline's piano faculty regularly perform in the college's Piano Series as part of the Artist and Lecture Series. The series presents unique programs of solo and duet repertoire and features works that stylistically cover the history of European and American art music. Proceeds from the series benefit the Shoreline Piano Scholarship Fund.

Opportunities for Piano Students

Performance: Students enrolled in Music 172 and 272 are eligible to perform in quarterly Student Recitals. Each student performs a jury at the end of each quarter.
The Piano Ensemble performs at the Small Ensembles Recital each quarter.
Accompanying: There are opportunities to accompany voice classes and some individual performances on campus as well as middle school and high school students off-campus.

Piano Club

The purpose of this club is to provide extacurricular activities for the student to benefit their pianistic education, such as: master classes, workshops and tickets for piano recitals. Facutly advisors are Helena Azevedo and Ivona Kaminska.

In the 2005-2006 year the Piano Club:

• Attended concerts of pianists Andre Watts, Radu Lupu at Benaroya Hall and Arnaldo Cohen at UW Meany Hall
• Sponsored Brazilian pianist, Arnaldo Cohen as a guest speaker at Shoreline Community College

In the 2004-2005 year the Piano Club sponsored the following four master classes:

• Nancy Sicsic from the University of British Columbia
• Dr. Peter Mack from Cornish College of the Arts
• Dr. Wayne Johnson from Seattle Pacific University
• Dr. William Nyaho Chapman, an active performer and recording artist.

Music 222: Collaborative Piano
Intermediate and advanced pianists learn the skills and techniques of rehearsing, accompanying and collaborating with vocal and instrumental soloists and ensembles. Instructor: Charles Enlow

Music 223: Piano Pedagogy
Students interested in piano teaching will focus on repertoire and methods for teaching students in individual and group settings. Instructor: Helena Azevedo

Music 221: Survey of Piano Literature
Course Description: A survey of piano literature and performance practice. Students will learn the essential characteristics of piano compositions from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods. Other major topics include history of the piano and biographical information on important composers. Instructor: Jensina Byington

Music 120, 121, 122, 123: Class Piano for Music Theory 100, 101. 102,103 Students
First year Music Theory students are required to take Class Piano. They meet in the electronic piano lab to learn basic skills and techniques needed in music reading, music theory and piano performance. There is a class piano level for each music theory level.
Prerequisite: concurrent enrollment in Music Theory.
Students with piano experience can try to test out of taking Class Piano.

Music 124, 125, 126: Class Piano for Music Theory 201, 202, 203 Students:
Second year Music Theory students are encouraged to continue taking Class Piano. They meet in the electronic piano lab to review and learn more skills and techniques needed in music reading, music theory and piano performance. If students know what 4-year school they are transferring to, they will work on what is expected for an entrance exam, placement test or proficiency test at the 4-year school.
Prerequisite: concurrent enrollment in Music Theory.

Music 127: Class Piano for General Students
This class presents the basic skills and technique needed in piano performance. The class meets in the electronic piano lab and may be repeated up to six quarters. It is intended for students who have little or no background in piano technique. Prerequisite: None.

Music 147: Piano Ensemble
Intermediate and advanced pianists study duo piano, piano four hands, and piano ensemble literature and techniques. This course includes sight-reading, practice, and performance of piano ensemble literature. Prerequisite: Intermediate or above reading level of piano music.

Music 172: Private Classical Piano – First Year
Students receive one-on-one instruction on piano technique and piano literature from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods. Students prepare for and give public performances. Prerequisite: Reading knowledge of piano music and permission from Nancy Matesky

Music 272: Private Classical Piano – Second Year
Students continue to receive one-on-one instruction on piano technique and piano literature from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary periods. Students prepare for and give public performances. Prerequisite: Intermediate reading knowledge of piano music and permission from Nancy Matesky
