PE 279 Wellness – Video Class

 The Human Condition

 

Course Description: PE 279  (formerly PE 200) is an evaluation of lifestyles and review of health issues: stress, drugs, exercise, body composition, nutrition, cancer, cardiovascular, health, sexually transmitted diseases, aids, aging, and death, and dying with an emphasis on self assessment, taking action and behavior change.

Specific Objective: Review current information, assess behavior patterns and lifestyle, assess fitness levels and develop a plan of action as it relates to:

  1. General Wellness concepts
  2. Stress
  3. Cardiovascular fitness
  4. Muscular strength and endurance
  5. Health issues (i.e. disease, aging, death and dying, exercise, etc)
  6. Body composition and nutrition

The Human Condition

In 26 half-hour videos, The Human Condition offers the learner a comprehensive, up-to-the-minute look at health and wellness today focusing on ten topic areas:
• Biological, Social, and Economic Dimensions of Health
• Emotional and Mental Health
• Sexual and Reproductive Health
• The Life Cycle
• The Impact of Heredity and Lifestyle on Health
• Health and Chemical Substances
• Promoting Well Being through Fitness and Nutrition
• The Battle Against Infectious and Chronic Diseases
• The Individual in the Health/Medical Marketplace
• Health Care and the Global Community

Students may purchase the series in the bookstore or follow Library/Media Center Support/Procedures to obtain the videos.

Telecourse tapes may be either rented as a set or borrowed individually from the library.

 

To rent a complete set of tapes for the quarter, a fee of $25.00, cash or check, must be paid at the Circulation Desk in the Library/Media Center. Debit/Credit card users will need to go to the Cashier's Office in the 5000 building to conduct this transaction.

 

Tapes for telecourses are available for viewing or checkout in the Library/Media Center.  One master of each tape will be available for viewing at all times. Attendance:  Attending mandatory sessions as listed on the instructor’s web page under Office Hours and Due date’s section of the web page for Spring 09

Video review:  Students are required to review the video series “The Human Condition”.   A schedule of for video review and related reading is included below.    After viewing the video students must complete the written work listed below for each video segment. All video reviews work turned in must include your name, class name and number, class time and day, and name and number of the video to receiver  credit.

Video Note:  As you review the video take detailed notes, you will need to turn in readable video notes in outline format, for each 30 minute video.  As you watch the video pay attention the health issues discussed and the risk factors or behaviors that increase a person’s risk or contribute to the onset to the condition, the type of treatment available and barriers to treatment.

Personal Response and Opinion Statement.  Include a 50 work personal response/opinion statement for each video state.  Include how you fell about the material presented, it content, the way it is presented and how the information changes your thinking.

Personal Application Statement Include a personal application statement assessing your current lifestyle in light of the video presentation, the risk factors or behavior that contribute to the onset and how it may lead to change in your behavior in the future.  Your personal application statement must be complete and no less than 100 words and should clearly show you are applying  video information for your lifestyle. Use details for the video to support your comments.  This self assessment will be used to complete the final project so be as specific and detailed.

The video review is intended to be an assessment of your understanding of the video materials for the class.  Be complete!!

Video note must be turned in on your class day of the 3rd, 5th, 7th 8th, 9th and 10th weeks of the quarter according to the posted schedule as listed on the instructor’s web page under Office Hours and Due dates’ section of the web page for Spring 09.  Video notes, Personal Response and Personal Application Statement will not be accepted late.  Please keep the schedule in mind when selecting view times.   Each video write up is worth 10 points for a total of 260 points.

Reading and Written Tests:

The text is required reading for all students:  A list of related reading is posted with the video schedule.  As you read the chapters and in preparation for the written tests, pay attention to the learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter; all charts; diagrams; and figures and have a clear understanding of the terms presented in the text. 

 Testing:

There will be two written test covering the information presented in the text for a total of 200 points. The test may be a combination of True-False, Multiple Choice and Short Answer questions.  

Tests will be posted on Blackboard and email notification will go out through Blackboard two day before the due date; The test will only be posted on Blackboard for 48 hours.   You must complete the test and turn it in on the test date.  You will be required to turn in both the questions and the answer sheet.  All tests turned in must include your name, class name and number, class time and day.  All test must be turned in to my box no later than 3:30 pm on the posted due date for Test 1  and at the last required meeting date for Test 2. All test dates are posted on the instructor’s web page under Office hours and Due dates section of the web page for Spring '09.  Please follow ALL direction printed on the test.

Lab Work:

Each Chapter has a series of Lab Activities to reinforce the reading materials and assist students in assessing their life style.  A schedule of required labs is listed below.  Completed labs must be turned in Lab work with the video assignment on your class day of the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th , 9th  and 10th weeks of the quarter according to the posted schedule as listed on the instructor’s web  page under Office hours and Due dates section of the web page for Spring '09

Personal Lifestyle Assessment Statement.

In addition to the lab as presented in the text, provide a personal lifestyle assessment statement (1 to 2 paragraphs) showing what you learned from doing the lab, and readings the text.   The personals lifestyle statement must be included for each lab be attached to the lab.  Be as detailed as possible, using both the readings and lab to explain your comments.   The self assessment information provide in this statement will be used to complete you final project.   Students will not have the opportunity to revise labs not receiving full credit, be sure they are complete when turned in. All labs must be on time and complete, no Lab Work will be accepted late.  Each lab is worth 10 points for a total of 240 points.

Final Project: "Steps to Success" Total points 100

During the eighth (8th) and ninth (9) weeks of the quarter the details for a two final project will is posted on Blackboard.  Each student will be required to complete this “Steps to Success” behavioral modification project to complete the class. One class meeting will be set to assist students in the completion of this assignment.  This project has two parts.

When the final Project is turned in must include your name, class name and number, class time and day, and name of the assignment to receiver credit.

Part One: Self Evaluation.  (Posted in Week 8)
Using your self assessments statements from the video work, and the reading and lab work complete the Self Evaluation worksheet. This work sheet is intended to be a summary your finding from video review, reading and lab work.  It will help you determine where you need to make positive changes towards a healthier lifestyle. Be as complete and specific as possible. Make it readable!!!

Part Two: Steps to Success Plan of Action.
The Steps to Success Plan of Action handout will posted in week 9 of the quarter. The plan of action is intended to help students map out a clear plan for change to meet their goals for a more healthy lifestyle.  Based on yourself evaluation summary you will set 3-5 specific, realistic and measurable goals that will change you life for the better and then develop a step by step plan to attain those goal. (large goals broken down into small steps make them more achievable.

Personal Quarter Assessment:   50 Points

Each student will be required to complete a one page double spaced typed written paper indication how this class has helped change their life, broadened their thinking, and what kind of an impact it will have on their behavior in the next 6 months, 1 year and in five years.  In other words how do you plan to integrate health and wellness into your everyday life.  Due at final required meeting time (check http://success.shoreline.edu/segle) for date.  Bring two copies to class.

Grade: The student's final grade will be based on total points earned for completing assigned written as assigned, mid-term and final tests.  The chart below is a break down of the points available for on each assignment and test.

Physical Education Writing Assignment Specifics
1. Each student must complete at least one (1) of the writing assignment options presented in class. A second paper may be completed for extra credit.

2. Papers must be at least 2 FULL PAGES with top, bottom and side margins of no more than .75 inches. A title page should be used and include your name, class, class time, option and title of your paper. The paper is to be double spaced, typed, using print no larger than you see on this page.

3. Your paper is to be written in your own words. Use no more than two quotes and do not paraphrase. You may write your paper from a creative perspective, or in the traditional research paper format. You must use proper footnotes and work sited format, and provide a bibliography. Refer to MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers for a guide in writing your paper.

4. A bibliography must be included for credit. If you use the Internet as a resource you must provide a printed copy of the article and the URL address. Failure to provide a bibliography will result in a "0" score on the assignment with no opportunity to complete the assignment after the due date.

5. Incidence of plagiarism will result in a "0" score on the assignment with no opportunity to redo the assignment. Webster's' New World Dictionary defines plagiarizing as "to take ideas, writings etc. from another and offer them as your own work."

6. Incidence of cheating on any test or written work will result in a "0" score on that test or assignment.

7. Papers must be turned in on time to receive full credit. On time means on the assigned date before the end of your scheduled class time.

Wellness Extra Credit Options

 Option 1: Current Events:  10 points each for up to 3 news articles

Find a current new articles (must be dated between the dates of the current quarter) that touches on one of the health issues covered in class.  Read the article, then write one paragraph, tell me what the articles is about and a 1-2 paragraph personal response to the articles.  Turn in a copy of the article and your written response must be turned in at the same time.


Option 2 - Term Paper

Write a 2-4 page, double spaced, type written fitness or sport related term paper. If using a computer with variable size type size may be no larger than 11 point type. (The type should be no bigger than what you see on this page.) Topics may include but are not limited to the following subject areas:

The topic must be related to the material covered in class.

 
Use three (3) different references including at least 1 periodical, 1 skills related book, the Internet
and/or one reference book. (Note: If you chose to use the Internet as a resource, attach a printed copy of any and all information and/or source you use when you turn in your assignment.) Site all references using proper footnote or works cited format and bibliography formats. Please refer to MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, R 808.02/G437 for a guide to write your paper. You have the option of writing a research paper according to the above handbook or you may chose to apply the research information in a creative way.


Remember, I want to know what you think about the information you have collected. So, use no more than two (2) quotes and do not paraphrase. Using your own words show you understand the information gathered from your sources. Papers that are paraphrased or have more than 2 quotes will not receive full credit.

Option 3 - Internet Assignment

Using one of the Internet addresses listed below complete the following:
1. Go to the website you have selected. Print the screen.
2. From the list that appears on the website, select two sites to visit. You should select sites that yield written articles on the topic you selected in Step 1. Print out the articles NOTE: You may have to proceed through several general web sites until you reach an article. Remember to print out each site and complete the log.
3. Once you reach an article visit one additional site for each article you found in step 2. Print out each article you select.
4. On a separate sheet of paper, keep a log of the www. addresses you visit. You must record the Address/URL, your observations, and a site description.
5. You should now have 4 (four) articles that relate to the original topic you selected. Read each article then write (typed, double spaced) a synopsis of each (approximately 1/2 page each.).
6. Write a 2-3 page (double-spaced, typed) paper that compares and contrast the the articles. You should include writing styles, presentation of information, the site in general, etc. Do not report on the information in the articles but how it is presented and the sites in general.
