Medical laboratory personnel examine, analyze and test clinical specimens such as cells, blood and other body fluids.  Their work helps in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease. The traditional disciples in the clinical laboratory are Hematology, Hemostasis or Coagulation, Urinalysis, Serology or Immunology, Microbiology, Chemistry and Blood Bank.

Within each laboratory, departments can be organized differently, so that staff can complete the testing on their patient population.  New roles for the laboratory worker are found in Infection Control, Point of Care (POC) testing, Forensics, Veterinary, Marketing, Toxicology, Quality Assurance and Molecular Biology.  Clinical laboratory testing is in a state of constant change.

Graduates from clinical laboratory science programs are in high demand, due to retirements, limited approved programs and personnel shortages.  The field is closely associated with pathology, but clinical laboratory science has a body of knowledge separate from pathology.

There are six clinical laboratory programs in the state of Washington. Any of the Program Directors would be happy to answer any questions you have or arrange for informational sessions or tours.
