Employees:  Learning Assistants (Tutors) and Desk Assistants

LEARNING ASSISTANTS:  All learning assistants share an enthusiasm for mathematics. Each quarter, around 20 learning assistants serve in the Math Learning Center. Most assistants work between 5 and 15 hours a week. Some of these learning assistants are volunteers, some earn 1 - 3 credits through Edu 199, and others work for a salary on an hourly basis or as work-study employees. Some of the learning assistants have college degrees in mathematics while others are students at Shoreline Community College or nearby universities.  Most of the hiring takes place before the start of classes in September, but a few additional employees are added throughout the year. Most learning assistants have completed Math 125 with grades of 3.5 or better.

DESK ASSISTANTS:  All desk assistants are extremely friendly and helpful to students in the MLC.  The desk assistant is not required (although it is preferred) to have any knowledge of mathematics, or know how to explain any mathematics.  They need to be able to deal with many people quickly, and professionally.  Answering phones, checking books in and out, handing out tests, and assisting students are also parts of the job.  Almost every desk assistant is a work-study student.  (If you are a work-study student looking for part-time work, stop by and speak to the director about a possible job)  If you are not work-study, and you are looking for a part-time job and have had experience with customer service or as a receptionist, come talk to the director.  Occasionally, some students who are not work-study can work as desk assistants if there is great demand for them.
