Description:

ESL 100 prepares students for English 101 and further academic coursework, continuing and refining the skills covered in ESL 099. Emphasis is on content-based reading and writing for academic purposes. Students study more complex grammar and vocabulary and read increasingly complex pre-college to college level materials.

Writing:  

--Students must complete a variety of in- and out-of-class essays  incorporating both personal and external topics and demonstrating increasing sophistication and complexity.  

--Depending on textbook selection and instructor preference, instructors may choose a content-based and/or rhetorical pattern approach. In essays or short answer form, students should practice these rhetorical patterns:

*In order to pass the course, students must write at least one passing in-class essay without notes or other prior preparation.  Both in- and out-of-class writing should be evaluated according to the SCC ESL 099/100 rubric and descriptors, available on the Instructor Resources website.  

Reading:

--Students must demonstrate ability to read and comprehend materials at an introductory college level.  

--In order to avoid using texts from other levels, it is highly advisable that instructors consult the approved list of texts on the ESL Documents website, Academic ESL page:  http://elmo.shore.ctc.edu/esl/

--Texts should be academically oriented.  Students may also be asked to read supplemental newspaper and magazine articles, essays, literature or content textbook selections from fields such as psychology, communication, cross-cultural studies, etc.
