Q: What do I need to know about virus protection?

Computer viruses can cause damage to your computer and the files stored in it. Blackboard does not include any virus protection software--it will not be affected if users upload items containing viruses. However, if you send a file with a virus to someone else in your class, that person's computer may become "infected" as well.

Using responsible computing practices, such as having an active and up to date virus protection installed on your machine should prevent users from downloading items containing viruses.

If users are aware of the files they are downloading from Blackboard and maintain intelligent computing practices they can avoid retrieving items containing a virus from the Blackboard application. A virus is usually transferred when you download one of the following file extensions: .exe, .bat or .zip

There are free anti-virus products available to help protect your computer. You can find information about virus protection software by clicking here.
