Ratemyprofessors.com scores students

Ever heard of RateMyProfessors.com?

It’s a website that allows you to rate your professors on how well you think they do their job. From a class’s difficulties and appeals to a professor’s personality and popularity, this site has the potential to be a tool for students to use when researching classes to take in the future.

Almost everything about the site benefits students: We can basically conduct a background check on a professor before we even register for their class.

Sure, picking fields to study isn’t just all about the professor’s ratings. Other students’ opinions of a professor’s teaching style and area of expertise can be useful when it comes to narrowing down your list of classes for the upcoming quarter.

“I love this website,” said Jason Arurang, a sophomore at SCC. “It helps a lot when registering for classes and choosing your professor. You can read other students’ opinions on the instructor. It could help everyone.”

But can we believe all of the ratings and opinions on this website? No one will stop a fuming student from giving his or her least favorite professor terrible ratings. On top of that, who’s to say that the commentaries on RateMyProfessors.com represent what you hold to be reasonable expectations for a college-level class?

“It’s a very interesting website, but I think you have to be careful about what you believe,” commented Valerie Needham, a freshman at SCC. “Some of the things on the site could be very biased.”

At times, it may be better to trust your heart rather than become puzzled by other people’s ratings. Though having more information is always good, remember: You never know how a class is going to impact you until you actually step inside the classroom, meet the professor, read the textbook, and do the labs.
