A tree, which was about eight inches in diameter,
spanned the length of her car from the drivers
side on the hood to the back of the passenger’s
side. “I was like ‘W-T-F?’,” Adkins said. “So I called
my mom…I was able to push it (the tree) off, but it
took a little muscle.”
The tree dented the jeep’s hood and roof, and
cracked the windshield, requiring all three to be
replaced.
The jeep’s damages amounted to $4,000, but
Adkin’s insurance covered the cost except for $100.
Adkins called the campus security from her home
about half an hour after she found the tree on her
car. The next morning she met with a campus security
officer at her car where he wrote a report
and took pictures. “It was handled really quickly,”
Adkins said.
Adkins could have held SCC accountable for the
damages to her Jeep, but the process was too intense
for a mere $100. “I didn’t feel like getting into
it,” Adkins said. “I guess I’m just lazy!”
Adkins now considers the incident funny. At the
time, though, “I was more astounded that it happened
to me,” Adkins said.
Adkins still parks on campus, but she now looks
for spots without trees.
“A lot of trees (at SCC) look like they’re about to
fall over,” said Adkins. “It scares me. I don’t want a
tree to fall on someone.”
