PUB operations committee plans priorities

The PUB Operations Committee will be in charge of regulating the details of new 52,000 sq. ft. $20 million social center.

Comprised of everyone from security officers to student government representatives to art organizers, they’ve had two official meetings.

The committee will continue to meet throughout next year. “Running a building is a pretty complex endeavor,” said Cathy Chun, executive director of student life and a committee member. “Having people there (in the committee) who are connected with different parts of the building will help things run smoothly.”

The committee’s duties include setting the PUB’s hours, helping groups move into the PUB, and making sure the PUB fulfills the needs of the students through small scale day-to-day decisions.

Though most of the furniture has been purchased for the PUB and is being set up, the PUB Operations Committee is looking to purchase necessities such as recycling bins and door mats. They’re also working on putting a stage in the PUB.

In the committee’s past meetings, they’ve made a list of priorities for their dealings. The committee wishes to establish clear procedures for the PUB. For instance, what bulletin boards will be used for. They’ve made it another of their goals to communicate well with people in the PUB- both students passing through and the organizations that reside there. Still, the PUB Operations Committee is most concerned with safety.

SCC’s previous PUB had an area set aside for campus security, but somewhere in the PUB’s long planning and building process, the security’s presence was neglected.

It has become a major concern to the PUB Operations Committee that there is no office space in the PUB for security to inhabit. The PUB’s hours of operation tdepend on how often security officers can be present, and their presence is limited if there’s no designated room for them within the PUB.

After weighing their priorities, the committee is considering sacrificing one of the PUB’s meeting rooms or the PUB’s game room.

Through their work, the committee hopes the PUB will appeal to the students who attend SCC, the community around SCC, and students who may be considering community colleges.

The PUB’s fences have yet to come down as the contractors are still assembling and fixing light poles as well as outside handrails.
