Resolution of the disappearance of Project Pride posters


EXECUTIVE BOARD
RESOLUTION 0708.01


February 8, 2008

WHEREAS,
an unknown person or persons have systematically targeted promotional materials advertising or sponsored by an officially recognized student club, Project Pride, including posters, donation collection bins, and the donated the materials themselves, for vandalism and theft; and

WHEREAS,
the Student Conduct Code states that “students assume the responsibilities that include, but are not limited to, respecting the rights, privileges, and property of other members of the campus community and refraining from conduct that would interfere with College functions or endanger the health, welfare, or safety of other persons,” and that “violations of the Student Conduct Code will lead to disciplinary action”; and

WHEREAS,
College Policy 5240 states that “any student or student organization, through the distribution of materials, presentation of media, or posting of signs may exercise on college property the rights of free speech and free inquiry consistent with state and federal laws”; and

WHEREAS,
College Policy 5271 states that “students’ rights to free expression will at all times be protected and respected,” and that “the college will dedicate itself to the advancement of knowledge by encouraging a multiplicity of views and ideas”; and

WHEREAS,
the Washington Administrative Code 132G-124-010 titled “General Conduct” states that “conduct which intentionally and substantially interferes with or disrupts lawful college activities is prohibited,” and that “persons who engage in such conduct will hereby be denied license or privilege to enter or remain in or upon grounds or facilities owned or operated by Shoreline Community College, and are subject to disciplinary and/ or other legal action”; and

WHEREAS,
it is the position of the Shoreline Community College Student Body Association Executive Board that the forementioned actions against Project Pride constitute violations of the Student Conduct Code, College Policy, and the Washington Administrative code; and

WHEREAS,
it is further the position of the Shoreline Community College Student Body Association Executive Board that the forementioned actions against Project Pride are hateful, discriminatory acts repugnant to the principles of academic freedom, irrespective of their status in law or regulation;

BE IT RESOLVED,
that the Shoreline Community College Student Body Association Executive Board hereby declares its strongest condemnation of the forementioned actions against Project Pride, and its recommendation that any student or employee caught committing or conspiring to commit any such act be permanently dismissed from Shoreline Community College.
