It has come to our attention that on January 15, The Ebbtide ran a
front-page article titled “Delay PUB construction, rebuild an amphitheater
instead,” detailing Pi Iota’s plan to rebuild the amphitheater.
While the article itself is accurate, the headline is false and misleading—
it implies that we are advocating a delay of PUB construction,
which is absolutely untrue.
First, Pi Iota has no connection with the PUB and we exert no influence
over its construction schedule. Second, our amphitheater project
is a separate endeavor that has no impact on the dynamics surrounding
the construction of the PUB. Finally, we are just as eager for the PUB’s
completion as most other students.
The implied connection generated by the article’s headline was the
result of creative processes at the editorial level, originating form The
Ebbtide office, not our organization.
If The Ebbtide disagrees with our conclusion, we request evidence
that indicates that the origination of that false headline was initiated
by sources external to The Ebbtide. Otherwise, we demand that The
Ebbtide takes one of the following corrective actions:
Either (1) print a retraction of the headline, along with an explanation
and apology for the slander; or (2) print this letter to the editor in
its entirely.
We do not wish to appear demanding or undiplomatic, but please
understand that the implications resulting from the false headline damage
our reputation with students and have the potential to impede our
efforts in the future.
Sincerely,
Phi Theta Kappa
