If you ever want to imitate actors in movies or cartoons using swords, then Fencing Club is for you.

Advisor Robert (Bob) Shields got into fencing after watching Zorro, a fictional character who has been featured in American books, stories, films and television series since 1919. There are many other club members who got into fencing by watching movies in the past as well.

Fencing club has been around for a long time. “It existed over 10 years ago then faded for a while, said Shields. It has been active for at least the past four years while he was advisor.

Fencing Club currently has 17 members, but not everyone comes regularly and they welcome new members.

“The club is open to any student,” said Shields. “No experience or special skills are needed. We are happy to have new people anytime.“

The current group is comprised of a diverse group from at least three countries and two states.

Fencing Club’s president is Max Ginn, Jaehun Huh is vice president and Flynn Rector is Treasurer.

According to sophomore Huh, who has been in the club for a year, fencing is good for your health and fun at the same time.

“I would say the emphasis is one to have fun; the hard work just happens because people are enthusiastic,” said Shields. “I hope they will have had good exercise while being more aware of how important it is to practice and learn with other people.”

At the meetings, club members practice basic fencing skills such as sparring, as well as other new techniques.

Club members use swords while moving sideways in order to reach the opponent. Even though there are many rules and regulations, the basic way to win is to touch your opponent three times.

The goal of the club is for students to develop fencing skills and grace under pressure.

To Freshman Patrick Hart, fencing has a certain meaning and fun. He has been a member of fencing club for two quarters. “It’s a new experience for me and with Shields teaching, it’s easy to pick up the moves,” He said.

Although the club does not have any service projects this year, they sponsored a small practice tournament a few years ago. There are no current plans for any kind of traveling at this time.

The fencing club meets from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Room 3026. In order to participate students need to sign a damage waiver form.
