With a dedicated team of
15 members, Pre-Med Club is
looking forward to celebrating
National Wear Red Day and
hosting an information meeting
with UW faculty member Felicity
Abeyta.
Started by the American Heart
Association and other national
health-conscious organizations,
National Wear Red Day seeks to
support and promote awareness
on women’s heart disease.
Representatives from Pre-Med
Club believe that it is important
to notify students about what
heart disease is and who it can
affect, as it is one of the main
causes of death for men and
women in the U.S. Women are
also four to six times more likely
to get heart disease than cancer,
and knowing the symptoms
of heart disease may be useful in
the future.
“It’s not only elderly people who
get heart disease. Sometimes, we
find heart disease in young people,”
said Sampson Chan, vice
president of Pre-Med Club. “It’s
important to stay healthy when
you’re young.”
On February 1, Pre-Med Club
plans to set up a booth between
the gym and the library from
9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., with presentations
and other information
on heart disease. They will also
be selling Red Dress pins for $2.
Later that week, the club will
also be hosting Felicity Abeyta,
an officer at the UW Multicultural
Affairs department. According
to Chan, she will “come and talk
about how to prepare for dental
school and medical school.”
Abeyta will be speaking with
students from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
on February 5 in Room 2926.
This year, Pre-Med Club wants
to provide students with more
opportunities to get involved
outside of SCC. The club’s committee
members recently connected
with local and national
groups to plan and organize
events in the Greater Seattle
area, and are forming a team to
participate in the MS LifeLines
MS Walk to raise awareness on
multiple sclerosis at the Husky
Stadium around April.
