To the guy who brought
us “Knocked Up” and
“Superbad:” You should have
left “Walk Hard” in the trash
where it belonged.
Every so often, a parody
does an awesome job of making
jokes hit. Unfortunately,
“Walk Hard- The Dewey Cox
Story” is not one of them.
The movie follows the life
of late blooming Alabama
rock and roll star Dewey Cox
(John C. Reilly). From his
humble roots as an unprepared
father and wannabe
rock star, Cox covers every
era and musical genre within
the last 50 years.
He also covers every available
substance he can find.
It is a rough path to walk
from playing the guitar in his
kitchen to being on the top of
the music world, but Cox is
determined to walk it as hard
as he can. With the theme
of rebellious rock, many of
Cox’s songs are as basic as
“Guilty as Charged,” with
lyrics such as “I don’t even
care what anyone thinks, I
stay up all night and I smoke
and I drink.”
The parody works hard to
establish Cox as the Forest
Gump of rock and roll, but
the absence of a plot makes it
difficult to establish connections.
Beyond the sex, drugs
and random connections to
historical events, the movie
offers nothing to viewers.
As for all the guys who
draw the line for entertainment
at raunchy low levels,
here’s a clincher: There is an
excessive amount of male
frontal nudity.
Even with all this said,
there were a few funny moments
that were on the level
of “Superbad.” The problem
is that sifting through
an entire movie for a small
amount of quality humor is
neither worth the trip to the
theater nor the time.
My advice is to steer clear
of “Walk Hard” and the
B-rated humor that it brings
to the big screen.
