Lights dim, only covering a barren stage. Music rushes from a lonely piano, permeating the still air. And then a melody permeates the SCC Theater as students from the Opera Workshop 2008 take the stage.

Led by Stage Director Andrew Seifert, pieces from the Workshop include selections from five wellknown operas.

Performed in Italian is “Tosca,” a dramatic and riveting piece portraying the arrest of innocent Mario Cavadarossi (played by Steve Jones), who is in love with Floria Tosca (played by Enni Wu). Other selections include “Rusalka,” “Rifle Dance,” and “The Flying Dutchman.”

Students will also present a oneact adaptation of “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. According to Guest Conductor Teresa Metzger Howe, it is “humorous, whimsical and touching.” SCC’s Chamber Orchestra and Dr. Charles Enlow (on piano) will be accompanying them.

The Opera Workshop performances start at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 28, Feb. 29 and Mar. 1. Tickets will be sold for $15 through general admission, $10 for seniors, students and faculty; and $8 for children and students with photo I.D. They will be sold on the performance nights, but can be purchased ahead of time. Call Susan Dolacky at (206) 546-4617 for more details.
