SCC’s Ping Pong Club is off to an active start after hosting its first ping-pong tournament on Friday, November 9 in the “Little Gym.”

Although the tournament was scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m., most attendees did not arrive until noon. Among the ping-pong enthusiasts were club members who were scheduled to play in the tournament, their swarm of fans and curious eyes that sought to learn more about the game.

The tournament was intended to serve as a means for students to get a chance to relax on a Friday afternoon and enjoy some friendly competition. Although the atmosphere surrounding the tournament was tense as spectators watched white ping-pong balls fly back and forth between flailing paddles, the players were caught up with perfecting their techniques and out-thinking their opponents.

When asked about his motives for joining the ping-pong tournament, Kit Wan replied, “I just want to beat someone who’s better than me.” He also commented on his upcoming match with Roy Pun, his friend and ping-pong opponent.

“I love ping pong, ” added Pun as he described his passion for ping-pong. “I like the exciting feeling of winning.”

The successful turnout for the first two rounds of the tournament was attributed to Sampson Chan, the President of SCC’s Ping Pong Club.

Attendees claimed that they were impressed by his dedication to exceeding members’ expectations and his enthusiasm for organizing club activities.

“Last year, no one went to play ping-pong, but this year, there are many more participants,” said SCC student and Ping Pong Club member John Tsang. “Sampson started the tournament and really advertised it. That’s why it’s so popular right now.”

“[By becoming the President of Ping Pong Club], I learned more about how to organize a club,” said Chan. In light of the club’s success in bringing in players of all skill levels,

Chan plans to work with his colleagues to organize more events in the future that will gratify Ping Pong Club members and fellow spectators.

Players who are still in the tournament will be participating in a total of five matches, which will be continued at the “Little Gym” on Friday, November 16. Then on Friday, November 30 final matches will be held and a new SCC ping-pong champion will be crowned “King of the Court.”
