Softball season forecast

Numbers down, spirits high

Sports Editor

With the 2006 winter quarter comes many new additions to Shoreline Community College. New students, new weather, and also new conflicts are always inevitable. The new students bring new conflicts, new weather brings new sports, and all of the former are issues that beg to be addressed.

The Shoreline Community College softball team is no exception. Coming off a strong 2005 season, and a first place finish in north division in 2004 where the team broke all of the previous school records, the 2006 team is at a conundrum. Out of the current sixteen players, only nine are eligible to play. Although the program has lost some star players to graduation, grades are also a contributing factor. All problems aside, head coach Paul Smiley is in high spirits with what he has to work with.

“We have some promising freshman,” says Smiley. “Although we're down on pitching due to ineligibility, we have a good group of young women, and I think we'll fair pretty well.” Smiley is also encouraging any female athletes with softball experience who want to give collegiate softball a shot, to come out and see what you can contribute to the team. “There are definitely some spaces available for girls who can play,” says the coach.

Head coach Paul Smiley is a veteran in the softball kingdom, having over 20 years worth of coaching to his name. Having been a part of ASA softball organizations and high school softball, he has taken all of them deep into the playoffs, including state championships and national tournaments.

Although numbers haven't been up to previous years, there are two returning sophomore players to watch this season. Center fielder Jacque Huden is a constant threat on field with her ridiculous speed and quick bat in the lead-off spot, whereas shortstop Erica Benson swings the big-bat carrying an average over .300 in 2005. Benson is also the Shoreline women's keeper in the 2005 soccer season where she helped lead the team to their first-ever undefeated season, and taking fourth place in the NWAACC championship tournament.

“We have a good competitive group of girls and I think we'll be O.K. We're hoping to still make the NWAACC tournament.” And with all things considered, Smiley is still approaching the season as any coach would do with small strife. One day at a time and with a positive attitude.

If you or somebody you know is interested in joining the team, Paul Smiley can be reached at (206) 546- 4525, or email him at ShorelineCCSball@ aol.com.

Mailbag: How come nobody comes to (WNBA) games like before?

WNBA attendance is always a topic. The league is constantly shuffling around matchups to get the best draw to either look good on television or help struggling franchises. That's why you won't see many games on Monday nights -- they don't work. Or too many home games in June in markets where it's a high graduation/school month.

Live game thread: Seattle at Los Angeles

STORM LOSES: Something unexplainable happened with the blog and team in the third quarter. I wasn't able to post and they were unable to post up or handle the ball, losing 74-61. Seattle committed 19 turnovers overall for 24 Los Angeles points. A lot was sloppy play, but LA did play a lot better. Parker, who played 10 minutes in the second half of the Sparks' 21-point comeback win on Friday, was all over the place on Tuesday and the reason behind the win. She finished with 21 points, 10 boards and six monster blocks. The Storm posts of Wauters, Little, and Thompson had 38 points and 15 rebounds combined, but Little committed six turnovers. The flashy backcourt of Bird and Wright was horrendous, committing more turnovers (nine) than points (seven) combined. Seattle has a lot of work to do and luckily has time. Four days to be exact before it plays the defending champion Lynx on the road Sunday. Minnesota is 2-0 after defeating New York 80-62 on Tuesday.
