Shoreline Community College (SCC) has
taken out a 20-year loan to help fund the Pagoda Union Building (PUB)
renovation project, with the present school year representing year one.
This
major remodeling project is estimated to cost $17.5 million. In addition to
the loan, students pay $3 per credit (up to 10 credits) per quarter under
the title PUB Renovation Fee. In addition, 7.6 percent of the Student
Services and Activities Fee is collected at the end of each fiscal year and
added to the PUB Renovation Fee budget.
The initial vote to establish the
PUB Renovation Fee took place on Dec. 7 and 8, 1999. The ballot issued to
students read: "For the purpose of remodeling the Student Center (PUB),
shall the Associated Students of Shoreline Community College (SCC) assess
themselves a $3 per credit fee (maximum 10 credits) to begin fall of 2000
and continue until Student Center obligations are complete?"
According to
Scott Saunders, director of Student Programs, the PUB Renovation Fee will be
collected from students until all financial obligations are complete. With
SCC now managing a 20-year loan, it should be expected that this fee remain
active for the same duration.
While the long-term benefit of the PUB
Renovation Fee will be a brand new building, some students aren't sure they
should be paying the price.
"It seems a little unfair," student Bryan Wright
said. Wright, who will complete his time at SCC after one more quarter
added, "Why should the students who are leaving be asked to contribute
toward a building whose benefits they'll never enjoy?"
Even some new
students who will be around when the new PUB opens don't feel they should be
paying the bill. "I shouldn't have to pay for something I don't think is
necessary," student Yoshi Wright, who will complete his first quarter at SCC
come the end of fall quarter, said.
Saunders is aware of the criticism. "In
a perfect world, people who would be using the new PUB would be the ones
charged for it," Saunders said.
According to Saunders, SCC was required to
prove to the state that the college was serious about the project.
"I am
grateful to students for paying the PUB Renovation Fee," Saunders
said.
