Maasai life and culture with internationally recognized "Friends of Sironka Dance Troupe" on Monday, Nov. 18 from 10:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the PUB.
Heralding from the heartland of Kenya, these visiting performers convey, by song and dance, the distinctive rhythm and cultural mystique of African Maasai culture. Some people are just hopeful romantics
SCC international student Alketa Delija returned home last summer to do something for her community. She traveled to Albania with Shoreline and Edmonds Rotary Club members to drill a well at an orphanage in her home-town, Shkoder.
Delija, a pre-nursing student here at SCC, met a group of Shoreline doctors while they were working in an Albanian orphanage during the Balkan War. She worked at the orphanage at that time, and acted as a translator for the doctors.
Some time after returning home, Delija contacted them to see if they would sponsor her so she could study nursing in the U.S. - they agreed. She has now completed two years at SCC and has applied to the Nursing Program.
She contacted International Programs and Executive Director Paul Rucker worked with the Shoreline Breakfast, Shoreline Lunch and Edmonds rotaries to support the project. All three made financial contributions and the project was completed last September. Delija was able to participate during her summer break.
The project is one of a series of college and Rotary projects in developing countries. A group of Rotarians will return next September to build a playground unit at the orphanage.
