Marianne
Baker, RDH, MS
Marianne Baker earned her AAAS degree in Dental Hygiene in 1974, her Bachelor
degree in Dental Hygiene from University of Washington in 1986, and her Master’s
degree in Adult Education in 1996. She started her teaching career at Shoreline
in 1976. She has taught a variety of courses including Radiology, Restorative
Dentistry, Dental Anatomy, and 1st year clinic and pre-clinic. She has been the
program director since June 2003. She believes people learn best by taking an
active role and directing their own learning with the teacher as more of a
guide.” I like to break complex tasks into small component parts to enable the
student to easily learn each step before proceeding to the next step, and I
firmly believe that learning is best accomplished in a positive and supportive
atmosphere.”
Nikki
Honey, DDS
Dr. Honey graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry, and
is a member of the Dental Alumni Association. Besides being the supervising
dentist at Shoreline’s Dental Hygiene Program, she teaches Local Anesthesia and
Pain Control, Oral Pathology and Periodontology. She enjoys working with both
the first and second year students, and teaches students while doing dental
exams for patients at the Shoreline dental hygiene clinic. In her teaching
style, she likes to emphasize current concepts and their applications in
clinical practice. Her clinical focus is early detection and treatment of oral
diseases, as well as the connection of oral and systemic diseases.
Melinda
Lane, RDH, BS
Melinda earned an AAAS in Dental Hygiene from Shoreline Community College in
1975 and a BS in Dental Hygiene from the University of Washington in 1987. She
has worked in private practice in various dental offices since 1975. She has
also worked at the University of Washington, Department of Oral Medicine doing
TMD research since 1987. Melinda began teaching in the Dental Hygiene Program at
Shoreline Community College part-time in 1988, and became full-time first year
lead faculty and clinic coordinator in 2007. She teaches first year Clinical
Dental Hygiene, first year Fundamentals, Patient Records and is coordinator of
the Screening Clinic, and Dental Radiology. “It is my hope that all of our
students become the best dental hygienists they can be, achieving excellence in
their chosen profession.”
Carolyn
Christensen, RDH, BS
Carolyn graduated from the Clark College Dental Hygiene Program in 1996, and
received her BS in Dental Hygiene through the Eastern Washington Degree
Completion Program in 2003. After working in a private practice with a strong
emphasis on periodontal therapy, Carolyn began at Clark College as a clinical
instructor in 2001, and then started teaching full-time at Shoreline’s Dental
Hygiene Program in 2003. She is second year lead faculty and clinic coordinator,
and teaches second year Clinical Dental Hygiene, second year Fundamentals,
Community Dental Health, Special Needs Patients and Gerontology, Professional
Issues/Seminar and coordinates the extramural rotations. “My hope is to inspire
students to be the best dental hygienists they can be. I do this by holding
students to high standards, but also by teaching them in a positive, open
environment where mistakes are looked at as opportunities to learn.”
Rosie Bellert, RDH, BS
Rosie graduated in 1974 from Shoreline Community College. She has practiced traditional and restorative hygiene for 34 years, 12 years being exclusively restorative. She is the lead restorative instructor for the Shoreline Dental Hygiene Program, teaches Dental Anatomy, Local Anesthesia and Pain Control, and is also one of the second year Clinical Hygiene instructors. She is passionate about the arts and brings that passion into restorative hygiene.
Sue
Dougal, BS, RDH
Sue graduated from the UW with a BS in Dental Hygiene back when the UW still had
a dental hygiene program. Shoreline opened their program a few years later and
she came to teach here in 1971 and has been here ever since! She just recently
moved into a part-time teaching position after retiring from full-time teaching
for many years. “I love working with students both in the classroom and in our
clinical setting. Teaching hands-on skills is exciting and challenging. Seeing
students learn new concepts and skills is very gratifying and keeps me in
education.”
Ellen
Braun, RDH, BS
Ellen Braun graduated from Shoreline’s Dental Hygiene Program in 1993 and has a
strong clinical background in periodontal therapy. She teaches in both the
Dental Hygiene and the Health Care Information programs at Shoreline Community
College, as well as the Dental Hygiene Program at Seattle Central Community
College and the Degree Completion Program for Eastern Washington University.
Courses she teaches include: Clinical Dental Hygiene, Dental Anatomy, Terminology
and Diseases, Human Diseases, Oral Biology, Human Pathophysiology, Pharmacology,
Oral Pathology, Ethics and Jurisprudence and Research Methods. “I believe the
purpose of education is to provide an environment that makes learning exciting
while facilitating the acquisition of skills that support life-long learning. My
goal is to provide an environment supportive of individual student goals for
education as well as program goals and objectives. The key to an optimal
educational experience is for both the student and the instructor to keep the
lines of communication flowing and to remain open minded and curious.”
Marvin
Braun, RDH
Marvin graduated from the Shoreline Dental Hygiene Program in 1999. He worked in
a periodontal specialty practice for many years before starting to teach
clinical hygiene, and still works in clinical practice. Marvin is a second year
clinical instructor at Shoreline. His approach is to work one on one with
students to develop instrumentation skills while transferring classroom-acquired
knowledge to the clinical setting. He emphasizes critical thinking skills by
considering all possible etiologies of clinical findings and comprehensive
treatment planning for individual patients. His goal is to present concepts in a
manner where students feel encouraged and supported.
Dina
Jacobs, RDH, BS
Dina has worked in the dental field since 1991, first as an assistant, then
graduated from hygiene school (Wichita State University in Wichita, Ks) in 1996,
with an associate degree. She obtained her KS DH license in 1996 and her WA
state DH license in 2002. In 2005, she earned her bachelor's degree from Wichita
State University. She has been a member of Sigma Phi Alpha (dental hygiene honor
society) since 1996 (Alpha Alpha Theta). I received the Hu-Friedy Golden Scaler
Award in 1996, upon graduation. She has worked full-time as a clinical dental
hygienist until 2007, when she began teaching at Shoreline, primarily as a first
year clinical instructor.
Mary Dever, RDH, BA
Mary graduated from Shoreline Community College in 1972, and went on to complete her Bachelor’s degree at Seattle Pacific University and the
University of Washington.
She has worked for many years as a clinical and restorative hygienist
before expanding her career to include teaching at Yakima Valley Community College in 1977. Her primary focus is on restorative dentistry.being on Restorative Dental Techniques. She began teaching restorative dentistry in 1999, both at Shoreline Community College and at Lake Washington Technical College “Teaching has given me the opportunity to be involved in a community of motivated students that are enthusiastic about excelling in their
profession. As part of the teaching team I get to demonstrate and share my
knowledge and experience to promote a stimulating and safe place to learn
the values and skills that create leaders in Dental hygiene.”
Michelle Wolf, RDH, BA
Michelle graduated from the University of Washington in 1988 with a degree in Social Welfare. Loving the client contact, but wanting a career that brought more clinical aspects to her work, she graduated from Mount Hood Community College Dental Hygiene Program in Oregon in 1996. She has worked almost exclusively in cosmetic practices in both traditional and restorative hygiene. Michelle teaches 1st year Clinical Dental Hygiene as well as Continuing Education courses in Restorative Hygiene at Seattle Central Community College. “I love helping students and patients make the oral and total body health connection.”
