Intermediate Algebra by Lial, Hornsby, and McGinnis,

A scientific calculator is required for this course and may
be used on quizzes and exams. Occasionally, I may use a graphing
calculator to supplement the lecture.
You may also use either calculator during class or on homework or

Attendance:
|
Be
sure to keep up with the material covered in class. It is strongly
recommended that you read material before it is covered in class. If you
miss a class, you are responsible for all material discussed in class
and for any announcements made in class, including homework assigned,
worksheets, and quizzes.
|
|
Worksheets:
|
We will do worksheets (WS) regularly in class to learn
the subject by doing it. They are geared to help you learn better &
faster. All the WSs will be available on the class website.
Each WS might continue for several days & will be due on
the day of the quiz. Unless there are
extenuating circumstances, I will not accept late worksheets,
but early is okay. These will be
graded on completeness and correctness (I will select a couple problems
to grade.)
It is your responsibility to attend the classes on time
so that you do not miss them. If you do miss class, then get the WS from
the web & do it.
For solutions check with your classmates. Also when I
return the worksheets, I will post solutions online. Sometimes, I will
go over the worksheets in class. You might be asked to present problems
from the worksheet in class as well. Your 2
lowest worksheet scores will be dropped.
|
|
Homework:
|
We are going to be working through 31 sections that have
assigned homework. Working homework problems on a daily basis to gain
understanding and familiarity with the material will be vital to your
success in this course.
Homework will be collected on the day of the quiz,
so that you will be able to study from it during the week. Each section
will be graded based on attempting all problems. It is your
responsibility to check your solutions.
Unless there are extenuating circumstances, I will not
give credit for late homework, but early homework is okay. Due to
this policy, your three lowest homework scores will be dropped at
the end of the quarter.
|
|
Quizzes:
|
Quiz
days are noted on the homework schedule, and will be scheduled the same
day as homework assignments and worksheets are due. Please note that the
dates mentioned are only tentative, and the actual Quiz days may differ depending upon how fast / slow
we progress. I will remind the class one day before the Quiz day. Your
2 lowest quiz scores will be dropped.
If you have an illness or a school related conflict, you
must notify me before the quiz so that appropriate arrangements
can be made. Be sure to
e-mail me if you are unable to speak with me in person.
There will be no makeup quizzes after the solutions
have been posted online. However, if you miss a quiz, please talk to me.
If you have a valid excuse, you may replace that quiz score with the
score on your final exam from the corresponding sections that you
missed. Please note this policy is
intended for extenuating circumstances only and may not be done for
every quiz!
|
|
On Quiz Day:
|
Typically
we will have 5-10 minutes before the quiz for questions.
Staple
all HW sections together, with sections clearly labeled, and place in
one pile at the front of the classroom, with your name on each page. If
this is not done, I will not be responsible if pages get lost.
Staple
WS (if necessary) with your name on each page. If you want to work on
those problems after the quiz, you can do that. But you need to turn in
your WS and HW
by
5:00 pm
in my mailbox. If I get your HW or WS later than that, I will record it
as a "late" submission.
|
|
Final
Exam:
|
There will be a comprehensive final exam given on Monday,
December 10 from 11am-1pm in Room 2723.
You will not be allowed to
take this exam at any other time so make vacation plans accordingly. You
may bring one 8˝” by 11” page both sides of hand written notes for
the final. Cheating is not allowed during the final and I reserve the
right to deduct points if I suspect cheating.
|
|
Course
Grade:
|
The
course will be graded on a linear scale with 90% = 4.0 and 70% = 2.0
with quizzes etc. having the weight mentioned in the chart to the right.
For P/NC grading, you must have least 70% (2.0) to receive a P.
Your actual grade may be slightly higher depending on my understanding
of your mathematical abilities.

School Closure
|
If
class is cancelled because Shoreline Community College is closed
(inclement weather, earthquake, broken water main, etc.), we will take
up where we left off at the next class meeting. In particular, if
class is cancelled the day of a quiz or an exam, the quiz or exam will
be given at the next class meeting. Listen to the radio, news on TV,
check the college website www.shoreline.edu,
or call the college’s
main phone line (206) 546-4101 for closure and delay information.

Academic
Dishonesty (Cheating):
|
Cheating
is bad. No cheating. Besides receiving or giving unauthorized help
during a quiz or test, cheating includes copying projects or allowing
your projects to be copied. Do not turn in anything you do not
understand. I reserve the right to question you about anything you turn
in. Cheating includes any attempt to defraud, deceive or mislead me as I
assess your academic achievement in this course. Plagiarism is a form of
cheating. If you cheat, I will give involved parties an irreplaceable 0
for the assignment. The student may also receive a 0.0 in the course and
face college disciplinary action. Any parties to cheating will receive a
zero for that assignment (1st offense) or a zero for the
course (2nd offense). A zero for an assignment received in
this way will not be dropped (as a lowest score, etc.) and computation
of the course grade will be adjusted (as minimally and fairly as
possible) to reflect this.
Some of the work in this class is collaborative and I expect you to use
each other as resources. But for much of the required work,
collaboration is not allowed. In particular, on the quizzes and the
final exam, the work you submit must be your own.
|
|
Extra Credit:
|
Extra
credit may be available occasionally to give you a chance to improve
your overall grade. To receive full credit for this, you must clearly
write all steps, and be complete in your justification of the correct
solution to the problem. You may ask me questions and discuss the
problem among yourselves, but do not copy from one another.
|
|
Homework Assignments:
|
The
following chart lists sections we will cover each week, along with
corresponding homework problems and worksheets we will use that week.
The dates listed on the right are due dates for these assignments and
worksheets, as well as the quiz days. If there are any changes in the
schedule, I will let you know during class.
Please
see homework webpage for complete list of
assignments and due dates.
