* Learn gardening tips at class at Shoreline Community College

Learn how to make your garden more drought tolerant and easier to maintain at a gardening class at the Lake Forest Park campus of Shoreline Community College.  “Victoria’s 12 Step Program for a Fabulous Garden,” taught by Master Gardener and garden designer, Victoria Gilleland, will be offered from 1 to 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 13 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 16, 2009.  The class fee is $59.

*Open House at Center for Business & Continuing Education

LAKE FOREST PARK -- There may be “no free lunches,” but there are free classes at Shoreline Community College.  
 
The public is invited to attend a FREE CLASS (choose from three) at an Open House on Thursday, September 18th from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the college’s Center for Business & Continuing Education located at the Lake Forest Park Towne Centre.  Put your vision of your business plan on paper in the One Page Business Plan class, get going on designing your web page in the Introduction to Web Design class or learn how to shoot compelling photos from award-wining photographer, Bob Stahl in Photo Tips.  (Registration is required for the Open House free classes before September 18.  Call (206) 533-6702.)

Also, meet the new center Director, Cynthia Johnson, tour the facility, and talk one-on-one with business management, green living, computer skills and creative arts instructors at the Open House.  Mark McVeety, consultant for the new Small Business Accelerator program, will be on hand for free business plan consultations.     

Check out Tai Chi, fencing, and belly dancing performances by some of the most popular Continuing Education instructors from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. at the Third Place Commons stage and enjoy cheese tasting throughout the evening with our wine and cheese instructor, Tod Daniels.  Raffle ticket winners will win a variety of local products from merchants of the Lake Forest Park Towne Centre.

*SummerCollege at Shoreline CC

A weeklong educational sampler that offers seniors 50 and older the opportunity to return to the classroom for classes about timely and interesting subjects.  Class subjects range from Islam in a contemporary world to North American archaeology to African literature to international relations (which is taught by instructors from the UW’s Jackson School of International Studies.)  
 
Additionally, a different topic is covered daily in the Daily Sampler from 11 a.m. to noon.  These include the history of the Wing Luke Asian Museum; Human Migration and Occupations in the Kuril Islands, Russian Far East; World Oil Supplies: The Questions No One Wants to Answer; Klondike Gold Rush; and Photo Tips.   (Special thanks to The Jackson School of International Studies, The Wing Luke Asian Museum, and the Lifetime Learning Center for their support of SummerCollege 2008.)

This is year 22 for SummerCollege.  The program is developed and coordinated by Shoreline Community College’s Extended Learning Program.

Media representatives are invited to talk with both faculty and seniors between classes and during the lunch hour from noon to 1 p.m.  Some classes are also available to media representatives.

* Shoreline Community College offers green living classes

SHORELINE - Shoreline Community College, named Washington State’s first National Training Center (NTC) for the National Alternative Fuels Training Consortium (NAFTC) last year, offers alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicle training through the Extended Learning Program.  Listed below are classes offered at the Lake Forest Park Towne Centre campus in January, February and March. 

 

Energy – The 1st Challenge of the 21st Century, Tuesday & Thursday, January 15 – 31, 6:30 – 7:30pm, $79.   Review the theory of peak oil and gas, and the implications for global warming, economics, both local and world politics. We will also explore and evaluate potential alternative energy sources, solutions, and future policy issues.

The Basics of Biodiesel, Thursday, January 31, 6:30 – 9:30pm, $39. Heard about Biodiesel but aren't sure exactly what it is or how it can be used? Learn about this clean-burning fuel made from plant oils that works in any diesel engine or home-furnace.   

Brew Your Own Biodiesel, Saturday, March 8, 10am, 4 p.m. $60. In this hands-on class you will learn all the basics to make your own high-quality fuel. Students will make small batches of biodiesel with different oils and help to operate an "Appleseed" processor to produce several gallons of fuel.

* Winter Wine Classes at Shoreline Community College

SHORELINE - Build your own collection of wine favorites for the holiday season.  Shoreline Community College offers wine appreciation classes with an emphasis on wines that tie to place and culture.  Enjoy “lips on” training at these classes.  Instructor Jeff Omalanz-Hood has been a gourmet cook and wine connoisseur for over 18 years.  Classes meet on Shoreline Community College’s main campus at 16101 Greenwood Avenue North in Shoreline.

 

Buying Bargain Bottles, Wednesday, January 16, 7 – 9pm, $39. What is most important: vintage, maker, region, or grape variety?  Find affordable drinkable wine

 

All Alsace, Wednesday, January 30, 7 – 9pm, $39. If you want to try some of the best white wine in the world, this class is for you.

 

Que Syrah, Syrah, Wednesday, February 13, 7 – 9pm, $39. Wines from the Northern Rhone, Washington, and Australia will be explored. Learn how they should be served and with what foods

 

Winey Bubbles, Wednesday, February 27, 7 – 9pm, $39. It's the season to celebrate French Champagne, Spanish Cava, Italian Asti, American sparklers and more. What's the difference? How do you choose one? We’ll discuss wine makers’ recommendations and foods that complement these great tastes.
