The Week of February 8, 2010

Week Ahead will be sent to you each week to keep you informed about college activities including workshops, sports, music and drama events as well as announcements from Student Government officers about governance activities that you may want to know about.  Week Ahead will also include articles about awards and accomplishments of fellow students, faculty and staff. 

Additionally, a link will be provided each week for you to check on important dates and deadlines (such as registration due dates, last day to make schedule changes, tuition deferment balance due dates, etc.).  Please be sure to check out due dates and deadlines that may affect you.

TRUSTEES OK GRADUATION CREDIT CHANGE
The SCC Board of Trustees at the April 22, 2009, meeting unanimously approved a plan that will trim the college’s most popular transfer degree - Associate in Arts and Sciences, Option A - to 90 credits by dropping Physical Education and Intra-American Studies as graduation requirements.  Read more on blog.

Should the College close because of an unexpected event such as inclement weather, fire, power outage, etc., closure or late opening information is posted on the college main web site at www.shoreline.edu, on the main college phone voicemail at 206-546-4101 and via a number of radio and TV stations (see below).  You can also check www.schoolreport.org
for updated information.  Also, watch for a new text messaging service for these and other important messages in the near future.

STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR 2010 – 2011
Good news!  A number of the SCC Scholarship applications for the 2010-2011 school year are now available. They can be found on the SCC Foundation website.

Deadlines are in April. Please check back in the next few weeks for the addition of other applications.  Included are scholarships for both students new to SCC and for continuing SCC students.

Shoreline Community College will host Homecoming on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 in conjunction with the men’s and women’s basketball games against Whatcom Community College that night.  Read more about Homecoming 2010.

ALARM TESTING FOR CHARTWELLS KITCHEN (PUB)
3-5pm, Tues, Feb 9

On Tuesday afternoon, semi-annual alarm testing will take place in the dining room & kitchen of the PUB. If you hear an alarm between 3-5 p.m. there is no need to evacuate the building.  The alarms will be brief.  I apologize in advance for any inconvenience/disruption this may cause. Thank you.  

ART CLUB VALENTINE SALE

The Shoreline Art Club is hosting the second annual valentine sale in the PUB lobby on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, Feb. 10, 11, and 12. The sale will be 10 to 3 on Wednesday and Thursday and 10 to 1:00 on Friday. Please stop by.  Maybe you will find the perfect thing for your valentine.

IRELAND STUDY ABROAD MEETING

In this 5 credit course, led by Professor Gary Parks, students will learn about Irish culture and creative writing through class lectures, visits to Ireland’s plentiful heritage sites and inspiring landscapes, and attendance at literary readings, theater, and other cultural events.  Literary arts are thriving in Ireland and the class will be exposed first hand to the Irish literary scene and various inspirations for creative expression.  Class choices include Introduction to Irish Literature or Beginning Short Story Writing.

REMINDER:  COLLECTION BARRELS FOR HOMELESS
Four collections barrels will be at several locations around campus to collect items for the homeless.  The sites of the collection barrels are the PUB, Library, Nursing Building 2300, and the Dental Hygiene Building 2500. The barrels have a bright yellow neon sign on them.

TESTING CENTER MOVES TO NEW LOCATION
On Monday, February 1, the Testing Center moved to its new location, room 5100 on the lower level of FOSS near the old Student Lounge.  The new location provides increased capacity for students, with 30 computers as opposed to 10 in the previous location.  "It's a much better environment, too," said Colleen Taylor, program manager of the center.  "It is much more comfortable and the windows provide natural lighting." For more information about the testing center, check out their web site.   Questions?  Call 546-4608.

THE RIGHT TO DREAM-PRESENTED BY LIVING VOICES
11:30am & 12:30pm, Tues, Feb 9, PUB 9208

Through the viewing and participation in this live presentation of THE RIGHT TO DREAM, students will gain a greater understanding of the American civil rights movement.

The Right to Dream is Raymond/Ruby’s story, a young African American growing up in Mississippi on the brink of the American Civil Rights movement. Early on, Raymond/Ruby feels the daily impact of racism and then is introduced to leaders like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., showing him/her that something different may be possible for blacks in America. Dedicated to joining these leaders, Raymond/Ruby receives a scholarship to attend Tougaloo College. Raymond/Ruby begins his/her involvement in the movement when s/he leads a sit-in at a local lunch counter. S/he then becomes a part of SNCC (the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee) and is a participant in the voter registration drive, the March on Washington, Freedom Summer and the March from Selma to Montgomery.  Read more - Study Guide.  Join us!

OPERA WORKSHOP PERFORMANCES FEATURES WORK OF EMERITI GLORIA SWISHER & WILLY CLARK
7:30pm, Thurs-Sat, Feb 18-20, SCC Theater

This year’s performance will feature the world premiere of The Legend of Poker Alice, a one-act opera by Shoreline emeriti Gloria Swisher and Willy Clark. The story line retells the true story of Alice Ivers. Also featured will be excerpts from Verdi's Il Trovatore and Falstaff, Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio, and Mark Adamo's Little Women.  Read more 

GLOBAL AFFAIRS CENTER TO HOST SYMPOSIUM ON INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE
The Global Affairs Center will host a symposium on international humanitarian assistance to take place on campus the week of February 22.  The focus will be on the work of local non-government organizations.  There will be three events the evenings of February 22, 23 and 24. Read more.

Business/marketing and VCT students are invited to learn about SCC's exchange program with Business Academy Southwest in Esbjerg, Denmark. Hear from SCC students who studied there last fall and Danish students currently studying at SCC. Scholarships are available for this program.

SPORTS UPDATE:

SHORELINE MEN'S BASKETBALL ROUTS OLYMPIC COLLEGE
The SCC men's basketball team defeated Olympic College 97-72 in a NWAACC Northern Region game Saturday afternoon. Jesse Vaughan hit 25 points with 11 rebounds to lead SCC to the victory. Shawn West added 16, Sean Jones 14, Alfie Miller-Soukasen 13, and Spencer Wozeniak 10. SCC is now 14-4, 8-2 in the region and in first place. Shoreline travels to Mt. Vernon on Wednesday to play Skagit Valley College at 7 p.m.

SCC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CAPTURES FIRST REGION WIN OVER OLYMPIC
Ana Haberman had 25 points and Lynsey Sandum added 18 as the Lady Dolphins won their first NWAACC Northern Region game of the year, 57-42 over Olympic College. SCC led 33-23 at half-time but Olympic cut the lead down to five points late in the game.  SCC took charge again and won by 15. SCC is 2-16 overall, 1-9 in the region. The Lady Dolphins play again on Wednesday at Skagit Valley College in Mt. Vernon at 5 p.m.

FREE H1N1 VACCINATIONS
Public Health – Seattle & King County is now offering free HINI vaccinations at community clinics throughout King County. The vaccinations are available free of charge to anyone who cannot afford the vaccine. You will not be asked for proof of health insurance or citizenship.

Children under 10 years of age should get two doses of the H1N1 vaccine. If 28 days or more have passed since the first dose, your child is ready for the second dose.

E-TUTORING NOW AVAILABLE 24/7
Shoreline now has online tutoring! The service is open to all students and is available 24/7. A writing lab, drop-off center, and live chat are all available. Students who submit papers for feedback can anticipate a response from any of the tutors in the consortium within 48 hours.

Shoreline students may receive free and online tutoring in the following subjects:

• Writing (for Comp. classes and across the curriculum
• Math (including calculus and statistics)
• Spanish
• Biology
• Chemistry
• Accounting
• Information Literacy (research methods)

Students interested in tutoring just need to access the website (http://www.etutoring.org/) and login to their account. Simply click on “Northwest Consortium” and then choose “Shoreline” from a drop-down menu. Next, students select the “log in” button and Shoreline’s announcement page welcomes the student and identifies the following information necessary to continue:

• username = Your Blackboard username
• password = “scc” plus the last five digits of your Student ID number.  (Example: “scc78654”)

If you are considering transferring to the University of Washington, Transfer Thursdays are for you!  Every Thursday afternoon is dedicated to serving prospective transfer students. At Transfer Thursday you can attend an admission information session, talk one-on-one with an academic and/or admissions counselor, attend one of many departmental or pre-professional program information sessions, go on a tour of campus, and more, all in preparation for transferring into the UW.  Read about.

Students may be eligible to apply for a short-term loan administered by the Multicultural Center and the Women's Center. Loan decisions are made on a case by case basis. Loan must be repaid in full by March 15, 2010. See attachment for more information.

E-ADVISING HELP IS ONLINE
Statistics show that students who utilize advising services are more successful than those who don't.  Shoreline offers advising services online as well as in person to promote your success.  SCC's eAdvising is a drop-in advising service available to students whose goal is to obtain basic advising information and referral.  Advisors can help you with your concerns and develop your educational goals. You can find your Advisor by contacting Advising and Counseling at 206-546-4559.  Shoreline's eAdvisors are Diana Knauf, Aura Rios-Erikson and Alicia Zweifach. It is important that we know when you are experiencing problems with Blackboard so we can fix the problem(s) as quickly as possible.  Please be sure to contact us at the elearning help line at eLearning@shoreline.edu to report any problems you are experiencing at any time day or night.  Hearing directly from you gives the eLearning staff important information that might otherwise go unreported.  This form of reporting will promote a quicker response to any and all Blackboard problems.

LEARN ABOUT STUDY ABROAD OPPORTUNITIES VIA NEW ENEWS
International Programs has just published the first Study Abroad Programs Enews.  The publication, to be published quarterly, provides all kinds of information -- such as summer and quarter-long programs, financial aid, information about why you might want to study abroad, and information meetings.  In fact, an information meeting is being held this week on Wednesday about the Summer Program -- Bali, Ireland and Jamaica as well as the quarter-long programs in Florence, London and Denmark.  Be sure to check this out if you are interested in earning credit toward your degree while learning a new language and building your resumé.  (See Events section below for more info).

Art EXHIBIT RUNS THROUGH MARCH 2

Ceramic artist Brendan Fuller explores pottery and firing influenced by traditional Japanese ceramics. Combining the available materials of the land, an experimental attitude with surface treatments and material reactions, and a true love of his work, Brendan creates soul filled usable pieces of art. Black and white, crawling white glaze on dark brown clay.

U.S. CENSUS 2010 JOBS AVAILABLE
The U.S. Census Bureau is accepting employment applications for 2010 Census work. Hired workers will earn good pay, get paid weekly, work flexible hours, receive paid training, and receive other benefits. As a Census taker, you'll help to make sure that everyone in your community is counted.
You may qualify for Census work if you are a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security Number, pass a written test of basic skills, and meet other requirements.
