Graduates of
the two-year Associate of Applied Arts and Sciences Degree in
HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY,
upon successful completion of the American Health Information Management
Association national certification examination, will join the ranks of
those professionals who use the credentials, RHIT (Registered Health
Information Technician). This professional is skilled at processing,
coding (ICD-9-CM, ICD-10, CPT/HCPCS), classifying, abstracting, analyzing and
managing health information using the latest manual and computer
technology. This individual works in a variety of settings including
acute care, long term care, clinics, mental health, home health,
hospice, rehabilitation centers, government and other agencies. Positions include coders in hospitals and
clinics, release of medical information technicians, cancer registrars,
medical information abstractors, quality improvement assistants, and
health information managers. Graduates are also prepared to take the Certified Coding Specialist- Physician's Office (CCS-P) national certification examination conducted by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the Certified Coding Assistant (CCA) offered by AHIMA for entry level inpatient coders, and the coder credentialing examination for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC and CPC-H) conducted by the American Academy of Professional Coders. With experience, these individuals will be prepared to take the advanced - level Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) exam available through AHIMA. The Health Information Technology Program at Shoreline Community College is Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). www.cahiim.org

Graduates of the MEDICAL CODING AND REIMBURSEMENT SPECIALIST program (Certificate of Proficiency) will be prepared for positions as coders (ICD-9-CM, ICD-10, CPT/HCPCS) as well as billers, patient accounts representatives, and other support positions in medical or dental offices, hospitals and other health care facilities. Graduates are prepared to take the Certified Coding Specialist- Physician's Office (CCS-P) national certification examination conducted by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), the Certified Coding Assistant (CCA) offered by AHIMA for entry level inpatient coders, and the coder credentialing examination for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC and CPC-H) conducted by the American Academy of Professional Coders. With experience, these individuals will be prepared to take the advanced - level Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) exam available through AHIMA. This program at Shoreline Community College has received formal Approval Status as a Comprehensive Coding Program by the American Health Information Management Association, the only program in the state with this award.
