Program Prerequisites

  • ESL Score of Level 4 or higher
  • CASAS test score of 220 or above

GED or High School diploma NOT required

 

Overview

We offer a nationally accredited, intensive program designed to prepare qualified individuals for entry into the job market as a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist.

 

Instruction covers programming and basic set up and operation of CNC machines, blueprint reading, shop mathematics, machine tool theory, inspection, surface plate techniques, and Statistical Process Control (SPC).

 

Groundbreaking Approach to Teaching

Our program has two instructors in the same classroom; one to teach technical skills, and one to teach basic skills like English or math. This teaching model, known as I-BEST, provides a high level of support that has been copied by other colleges nationwide. Read more about this at the Seattle Times' Education Lab.

 

What Students Will Learn

Students who successfully complete this program should be able to:

  1. Perform entry-level tasks as machinist; program basic machine tools to perform routine machining functions.
  2. Use math skills to solve basic manufacturing problems.
  3. Safely set up mills and turning tools, making tool length and work piece offsets.
  4. Apply teamwork, inspection and SPC to manufacturing problems.
  5. Utilize properties of materials and establish correct speeds and feeds.
  6. Interpret mechanical blueprints.
  7. Use current software for computer assisted machining.

 

Our Facility

The Shoreline machine shop has a tremendous variety of machines for students to learn from, and we continue to acquire more modern machinery.

 

We currently have:

  • 13 CNC machines. These include 3, 4 and 5 axis machines from Okuma and Haas.
  • Manual lathes and mills from ClausingSharpCincinnati, Bridgeport, JetHarrison and more.
  • A Metrology Center featuring a Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), a Romer Arm, a Starrett Video Measurement System, and an Optical Comparator.
