For the past forty-five years the SCC Opera Workshop has provided excellent training to aspiring young singers and actors, along with the opportunity to gain basic stage and performance experience while earning college credit.
Produced and directed by Dr. Charles Enlow, the SCC Opera Workshop is a fully staged opera production which premiers during Winter Quarter. Each production includes a selection of opera scenes and a one-act opera with an orchestra. Students have the opportunity to work with outstanding opera directors, coaches, costume designers, and conductors, and instrumentalists from the Greater Seattle community who are brought in for each production.
Auditions are held during Fall Quarter in the Shoreline Community College Campus Theater (1600 Building). Students will be directed to an online audition form to request their audition time. Singers/actors will need to bring one prepared song or aria to their audition. A pianist is provided.
Note: Participants must register for 1, 2, or 3 credits (MUSC 154, 155, or 156), depending on their level of involvement. Class meets 3-5:30 pm during winter quarter.
Opera Workshop 2018
Shoreline Community College Musical Theater and Opera program proudly presents Opera Workshop 2018, featuring Washington state stories and music. Highlighting the workshop performances is a world premiere by Seattle composer Bruce Monroe. A delightful one-act opera, Command Performance was written especially for this workshop program. Based on historical events taking place during the reign of Russian Empress Catherine “The Great”, Command Performance juxtaposes the dilemma of a young nobleman fleeing the wrath of his father with a trained troupe of opera-performing serfs ready to perform on command. These working peasants are both a puzzle and a wonder to all who encounter them. Hilarious hijinks arise and after appearances by the Empress herself, the opera culminates in praise and celebration by the serfs and their masters.
Also included on the program is The Quartet, by well-known Seattle composer Bern Herbolsheimer. This miniature opera is a charming adaptation of an original Slavic tale, deliciously scored for singers and chamber ensemble. Crowning these performances are scenes from The Golden Apple (music by Jerome Moross and libretto by John Latouche) and set in Washington state.
Performances are February 23 and 24 at 7:30 pm, and February 25 at 3 pm in the Campus Theater (1600) of Shoreline Community College, 16101 Greenwood Avenue North, Shoreline 98133. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, and at the door.
