Instrumental Music

Program Information

Shoreline Community College offers the most comprehensive Instrumental Music Program among the state's community colleges. Offerings include:

Ensemble Performance Opportunities

Students have the opportunity to participate in a broad range of large or small ensembles with an emphasis on classical, jazz and contemporary studies. Get more information about ensembles.

An Open Music Department

Music is for everyone: college students of all ages, Running Start students and community members alike. You don't have to be enrolled in a music program to learn to play an instrument or to register for music courses for personal enrichment. We offer a variety of instrumental music courses for students at different levels of music education and musical training. Our music faculty is happy to advise students seeking a strong musical foundation on their course selection strategy for transfer to a four-year university.

Private Music Instruction

Students can register for individual private lessons for credit. Our music faculty is comprised of world-class, professional musicians and highly accomplished music educators with a passion for teaching what they know and do so well. See this list of private music instruction courses.

Music Theory & Composition

The Shoreline Music Department offers a full six quarters of music theory, covering the fundamentals of common Western musical practices from the early 1600’s to the present day. Students must take a Music Theory Placement Exam prior to enrolling in their first music theory course to ensure proper placement. Second-year Music Technology students have the option of taking Pop and Commercial Music Theory after successfully completing MUSC 142 and MUSTC 143. See this list of music theory courses. Prospective students who have questions about specific music theory offerings, placement, etc., should contact Jeff Junkinsmith or (206) 546-4605.

The Music Department offers significant scholarship awards to eligible instrumental music students. Visit this list of performing arts scholarships for more information.
