Today's network problems
Beginning at 7:45 this morning we began experiencing intermittent loss of Internet connectivity.  By 9:20 the link was completely down.  The problem was traced to a computer in the VCT building which was flooding the network with traffic.  It has not yet been determined if the VCT host has been compromised, or if problem was due to a malfunction.  The host will be dissected to determine the root cause.
Summer Break Update
The blog has been neglected for the past two weeks while I was out SCUBA diving and mountain climbing.  No Internet connection, I hope you understand.

What's been happening:

The campus telephone cable has been cut, rerouted, and reconnected.  This procedure involved approximately 2400 individual wires.  There were some glitches on the first few hundred pair, but the rest of the cutover went very smooth.

The campus fiber optic cabling, serving the south and west ends of campus, were cut, rerouted, and reconnected.  This involved 150 strands of fine glass cable.  This cutover went without any problems.

Some reoccurring network anomalies were identified and corrected in the FOSS building yesterday (unrelated to the cutovers).  This should put an end to the network outages frequently experienced in registration and cashiering.
Telephone cable cutover

Work continues on the telephone cable system this week.  These changes are necessary due to the PUB remodel.

Telephone service to the music building will be cut over this evening beginning at 5:00 PM and continuing through the evening.  Service should be fully restored by 10:00 PM.

Telephone service to the Library with be cut over tomorrow beginning at 12:00 noon and continuing through the evening.  Service should be fully restored by 10:00 PM on Thursday.

Unresponsive mail server
The Exchange email server SCCMAIL1 became sluggish before 11:00 AM today.  The server is being rebooted to see if that clears up the problem.
Bandwidth Upgrade is Complete
The I-NET and K-20 technicians completed the cutover at 8:00 PM last night.  The campus is now connected to the Internet via a 20Mb/s fiber optic link.
Bandwidth Upgrade Update
The cutover is scheduled to occur some time after 5:00 PM this evening.  There will be a very short outage as the circuit is switched from the current 6Mb/s copper connection to the 20Mb/s fiber optic connection.
