Description Essay Assignment

The Faculty at Shoreline Community College have chosen an instructional theme for this academic year. That theme is "food." As part of that theme, your first assignment is to describe a place where you buy/consume food. Be sure to have a clear point in the description. For example, if I were writing an essay for this assignment, I might describe the Central Market near the College and my point would probably be about abundance. Be sure to be very factual/precise with the details and to clearly connect your point/thesis to the details.

Here are the requirements: 

• Write a focused, descriptive essay using precise, unique and vivid detail (be sure to consider all senses).

• Look through your essay and carefully consider what point you are trying to make about the place and make sure all detail is connected to the point (the thesis) and that the point is clear to the reader.

• Then look through the essay and see if more precise detail is needed to make the point and that you have connected the detail and showed how it develops your point.

• Title the essay with a unique title that captures the essence of the essay.

• Now look through your essay (and have others do the same) and make sure you have used precise, descriptive adverbs and adjectives and the characters match the subjects and the verbs match the action in your sentences.

• Type Description Essay—3 to 5 pages double spaced—with the following heading:

English 101
Quarter, Year
Description Essay

• Fill out Essay Evaluation completely (including grade earned and precise, detailed reasons why grade is deserved).

• Staple all pages together—before coming to class—and turn in on due date.
