Chinese Myths Group Presentation Outline

 

Class will be divided into five groups; each group will be responsible to present one of the following myths to the class.  Research for related material and be creative for your group presentation.  Each presentation should not be more than 10 minutes.

 

  1. Origins of the World:  How did the world come to be?

 

In Chinese mythology, the act of creation was understood as a matter not of bringing something out of nothing, but of turning formlessness into an ordered pattern.  The creation myths tell how various parts of Pan Gu’s body became magically transformed into mountains, rivers, rain and wind.

 

 

  1. The Creation of Humanity:  Who is the Mother of the world?

 

In Chinese mythology, Nu Wa was revered as the creator of the first people and was called to save the Earth and its people when the sky threatened to fall in after a dispute among the gods.  (Nu Wa and her husband Fu Xi)

 

 

  1. The Great Flood:  What can we learn from “ Yu the Great” to prevent flooding?

 

There are numerous Chinese myths about an ancient flood, besides those involving Nu Wa and Fu Xi, the most popular concerns a heroic figure called Yu the Great.

 

 

  1. The Time of the Ten Suns:  Why did Yi shoot the suns?

 

According to one famous star myth, there were originally ten suns encircling the earth. What is the famous star myth, about Yi, a divine archer with magic powers? 

 

 

  1. Chang E and the Moon:  Who lives in the Moon?

 

Deserting her husband Yi, Chang E floated to the Moon. What are the stories and holiday about the Moon?
