I grew up back east in Hull, Massachusetts, which is a small town on Boston Harbor. I came to Seattle in 1982 to attend Seattle University (I really wanted to get
away from home). I had a sister out here, I had visited a couple of times, and I didn’t mind the rain. I met my wife at Seattle U. as we were both chemistry majors and got married right after we graduated in 1986.
After S.U., we went to Los Angeles so I could go to graduate school at UCLA to study physical chemistry and I got my Ph.D. in 1991. We had great time down there, but knew we wanted to start a family back up here in Washington. My wife started working at the UW managing their hazardous waste, and I started teaching back at Seattle University on annual contracts. After our first child was born in 1993, I started looking for a teaching position that was more permanent. I was fortunate to come to Shoreline in 1995 as a sabbatical replacement, and I got hired as a tenure-track instructor in 1997.

We now have three children, Elizabeth, Jonathan, and Katharine (Katie).
My wife has retired from the UW to start her own consulting business and to be home with the kids. As a family, we love to go sailing, camping, and hiking. Individually, I like woodworking, fishing, and gardening, and my wife likes antiques, crafts, and floral arrangements.
