ARTICLE XVIII: STUDENT BILL OF RIGHTS
SECTION 1. No student shall be denied a safe place to learn and study.
SECTION 2. No student shall be denied the right to free speech or free inquiry. Students shall have the right to protest in a manner that is peaceful and does not disrupt their fellow students’ education. No student shall be denied the right to access any information through any medium.
SECTION 3. No student shall endure discrimination based on sex, race, age, ability, sexual orientation, sexual identity, religious beliefs, political beliefs, nor any physical or mental characteristics.
SECTION 4. No student shall be denied the right to a vote in Association elections.
SECTION 5. Students shall have the right to participate in College governance. The Association President shall appoint students to all governance committees and the committees and task forces that are advisory to them, and to all tenure review and hiring committees. If applicable, the Parliament shall nominate students for appointment to the Board of Trustees by the Governor of the State of Washington.
SECTION 6. Students shall have the right to organize in clubs. Any club consisting of ten or more students shall be recognized by the Parliament, and shall have the right to a representative in the United Club Council.
SECTION 7. All students shall have the right to petition their government. Students may initiate legislation through the petition process, and upon receipt of an initiative, the Parliament shall vote on the initiative.
SECTION 8. Students shall have the right to an open government. Students shall have access to all meetings of the Parliament, and shall be allowed to place items on the agenda. No student shall be denied the ability to read accurate meeting minutes, legislation passed by the Parliament, election results, the Association budget, nor this Constitution and its By-laws. The privacy of students’ personal records, including applications and grievances, shall not be infringed.
SECTION 9. All students shall have equal treatment and fair assessment of their work. Students who feel they have not been treated fairly, in grading, in financial aid, in services, or in any social context, have a right to representation by the Student Advocate, who shall negotiate on their behalf. Students have the right to file grievances with the Student Advocate for any disputes that cannot be resolved through negotiation.
SECTION 10. All students have the right to a socially just and environmentally sustainable campus. Students who feel that they are not given the opportunity to make socially just or environmentally sustainable decisions while on campus may seek assistance from the Minister of Social Justice.
