Math 80 Exam 1 Review Topics

Chapter 1: (Sections 1.1 through 1.8)

Fractions: be able to reduce, add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.  Also, convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers.

Know what exponents mean

Simplify expressions using order of operations and the commutative, associative, and distributive properties

Understand inequality symbols (i.e. >, etc.)

Know what it means to be a “solution” to an equation

Know what |-3| means.

Know how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with real numbers (including negative numbers)

Chapter 2: (Sections 2.1 through 2.5, and 2.7)

Know how to solve equations:

Adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing on both sides

Equations involving fractions

Recognize when there is no solution, or all real numbers are solutions

When given a word problem, be able to set up and solve a one-variable equation (see both 2.4 and 2.7)

Solve a geometry formula for a given variable

Chapter 3: (Sections 3.1 through 3.4)

Know what a “linear equation in two variables” is

Know how to plot points on a graph, given x- and y-coordinates

Be able to identify the 4 quadrants, and the x- and y-axes

Given a linear equation, know how to find points satisfying the equation, and plot them to draw the graph

Know what x- and y-intercepts are, and how to find them given an equation

Be able to recognize/write the equations for vertical and horizontal lines, and know the slope of each

Slope formula

Parallel lines (equal slopes) and perpendicular lines (slopes are negative reciprocals)

Forms for the equation of a line:

          Slope-intercept form: y = mx + b

          Point-slope form: y – y1 = m(x – x1)

Be able to write the equation of a line in slope-intercept form:

Given the slope and 1 point

          Given 2 points

Given 1 point and the equation for a parallel or perpendicular line
