SCC music instructor Jensina
Byington
is selected to perform with UW University Symphony Orchestra
Shoreline,
WA — After two rounds of auditions, Shoreline Community College piano, class
piano, music theory and ear training instructor Jensina Byington was recently
selected as a winner of the UW School of Music’s Concerto Competition. She was
accompanied by Shoreline CC’s staff accompanist, Dr. Charles Enlow. Other
winners included two additional pianists, a violinist and an oboist. The four
will perform a concert with the University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by
Peter Erös, Thursday, January 26, 2006 at Meany Theater. Ms. Byington will
perform the Piano Concerto in G Major by Maurice Ravel.
The University Symphony is an
ensemble of more than 70 student musicians dedicated to exploring the classical,
romantic and contemporary orchestral repertories under the direction of
internationally-acclaimed conductor Peter Erös. The orchestra is comprised of
the best string, wind and percussion players in the UW community, and performs
an average of four symphonic concerts and two operas each academic year.
Byington is currently studying piano with Craig Sheppard as a Doctor of Musical
Arts candidate. She has been an associate faculty member at Shoreline CC since
1998. Byington has a master’s degree of music from the University of Utah. She
has appeared as soloist and chamber musician n the U.S., Canada, Europe and
Israel with such groups as the Utah Philharmonia, Intermountain Chamber
Orchestra, and the University of Utah Symphony Orchestra. In 2000, Byington was
one of three Pacific Northwest pianists to be chosen by jury to participate in a
master class given by Murray Perahia at Benaroya Hall. She performs regularly in
the Seattle area and was a featured performer on “Live by George,” on KING FM.
Ms. Byington was a resident artist at the Banff Chamber Music Festival and
performed in several concerts there. She was a national finalist with the JST
trio in the MTNA Chamber Music competition. She has taught at Shoreline CC for
eight years. Music students at
Shoreline CC can earn both transfer and professional-technical degrees. The
Music Department, with over 20 faculty members, is the largest among the state’s
community colleges, allowing students to choose from a full range of offerings,
including a two-year classical music theory series, popular music theory,
songwriting, private and group vocal and instrumental instruction, music
appreciation, jazz history, technical training in audio engineering, ProTools,
sound reinforcement, and MIDI composition and production. Thirteen performing
groups are available for student participation.
