is selected to perform with UW University Symphony Orchestra

Shoreline, WA — After two rounds of auditions, Shoreline Community College piano, class piano, music theory and ear training instructor Jensina Byington was recently selected as a winner of the UW School of Music’s Concerto Competition. She was accompanied by Shoreline CC’s staff accompanist, Dr. Charles Enlow. Other winners included two additional pianists, a violinist and an oboist. The four will perform a concert with the University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Peter Erös, Thursday, January 26, 2006 at Meany Theater. Ms. Byington will perform the Piano Concerto in G Major by Maurice Ravel.

The University Symphony is an ensemble of more than 70 student musicians dedicated to exploring the classical, romantic and contemporary orchestral repertories under the direction of internationally-acclaimed conductor Peter Erös. The orchestra is comprised of the best string, wind and percussion players in the UW community, and performs an average of four symphonic concerts and two operas each academic year. Byington is currently studying piano with Craig Sheppard as a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate. She has been an associate faculty member at Shoreline CC since 1998. Byington has a master’s degree of music from the University of Utah. She has appeared as soloist and chamber musician n the U.S., Canada, Europe and Israel with such groups as the Utah Philharmonia, Intermountain Chamber Orchestra, and the University of Utah Symphony Orchestra. In 2000, Byington was one of three Pacific Northwest pianists to be chosen by jury to participate in a master class given by Murray Perahia at Benaroya Hall. She performs regularly in the Seattle area and was a featured performer on “Live by George,” on KING FM. Ms. Byington was a resident artist at the Banff Chamber Music Festival and performed in several concerts there. She was a national finalist with the JST trio in the MTNA Chamber Music competition. She has taught at Shoreline CC for eight years.

Music students at Shoreline CC can earn both transfer and professional-technical degrees. The Music Department, with over 20 faculty members, is the largest among the state’s community colleges, allowing students to choose from a full range of offerings, including a two-year classical music theory series, popular music theory, songwriting, private and group vocal and instrumental instruction, music appreciation, jazz history, technical training in audio engineering, ProTools, sound reinforcement, and MIDI composition and production.
